sure i don't get that from my manual
but i do get about 28- 30 round town an about 30-35 on a run
towed my caravan to scotland at easter an got about 27 mpg

If it is a 300 auto with EDC then 26mpg not towing would be good. 23 towing is about average

Mine's a '98 300 auto with EDC, blocked-off EGR and I get 33 all day long and more on a run.
I've just worked mine out, i did bout 100 miles on motorway, bout 150 on country lanes and bout 200 on mainly dual carriageway's (30 miles round trip for work each day for bout week 1/2) mines 300tdi manual. I got 28mpg the best i've got so far, i've only worked it out a few times bout the other times i was getting 27mpg. I wudn't so i was driving it particularly hard. I didn't go above 70 and didn't really put my foot down, i'd get more if i didn't go above 60, but i can't be doing with that, i'm always running late for work!!

Hmm,
Must be the quality of the diesel, as 28 is the best I have ever got being easy on the loud pedal. All 4 of my EDC 300s have been the same.

Roger that nzoliver, all I would say is that we live in the country so we're rarely involved in stop/start traffic, cruising speed rarely above 60mph and I try tkeep them both in A1 order re fluids, tyre pressures etc, frankly because I have the time and an interest in keeping them running their optimum.
With the wife's Tdi 200 manual we're getting 35mpg daily and on a run over 40mpg. The best we ever got was on a 400kms run to pick up a caravan, just gentle cruising and enjoying the countryside and we got 46 mpg !!!!!

I've just looked at Thebiglad's posts on fuel consumption, I get between 32 -36 mpg from my 200tdi but when in France and Belgium the consumption is closer to 40mpg. My initial thought was that northern France is relatively flat and I probably don't drive as quickly when on the 'wrong' side of the road but then fuel consumption did not significantly drop when back in the UK while still using a French fill-up. Has anyone else noticed a difference in consumption when using French fuel? Just curiosity.

I've always had better consumption in France and Germany, with 200TDi, Freelander and TD5. I had put it down to long motorway trips with no braking/hassle. But it could also be that fuel quality is better - France has been adding 5% bio for a while, and a lot of countries have different prices for truck diesel and car diesel - implying the car diesel might be higher quality. It seems especially odd because I normally drive faster over there!

To be serious for a moment, I know that in England during the months Oct to March, the distributers of fuel put an additive in diesel to reduce the possibility of "waxing" or freezing up of the diesel. In my experience this has always reduced our mpg figures.
Maybe we don't have that in France because it's generally warmer

That said, I've just emptied a tank of French fuel at about 24mpg in the TD5, which is pretty rubbish. I WAS driving it hard though.

Interesting about the aded 5% bio especially as the UK government has now decreed that all fuel sold in the UK is to have 2.5% bio added. Could we see better fuel consumption? As a possible point of interest, one of our sons has a 200tdi LWB Defender and gets 36mpg+, he spend a lot of time in southern Ireland so that can't be because it's flat countryside and much of his work involves short journeys on country roads. Anyway, thanks for going some way to satisfying my curiosity.
does he only drive to places that are downhill ? - or maybe his maths is really bad cos that mpg is hard to believe

well guys mine is an auto disco with an EDC and 26mpg sounds fantastic. Not good at maths so I will let you all work it out! last time I was home (6 weeks ago) i was filling my Tdi 300 auto for 86 quid and was getting 380 to the tank ful. That was pottering around town with some but not many average runs.
My TD5 DISCO gets at least 100 miles more from a tank full doing the same stuff.
If anyone can be bothered, THE QUESTION IS WHAT IS THE MPG?? =

Hi there, you don't say how many gallons or what price per litre so I made up some numbers:
£86 worth of diesel @ £1.15 per litre converted to gallons = 16.5 gallons
380 divided by 16.5 = 23 mpg
