hi all, well ive finally made the decision to go n get another 300 tdi, ive been blasting around in my ford focus on n 06 plate 130 bhp tdci, 55+ mpg, for the last 4 yers i bought it new, so i casn sell tha and raise bout 5.5k, sooooo, im thinking 1 of the last 3oo tdi's, what are they going for now?, i dont want a td5 ive too many horror stories bout susupension etc, n i dont want to be chucking money at a td5, my old 300 leaked like a seive, and it had no sunroofs so that emant all the floor rotted, bugger eh!, do the later ones leak with the sunroofs? im thinking about spending 3.5 k on one as clean and low milege as poss, although 100k is common on a dsico and bomb proof engines?

Mine is a 96 N and I have had no issues with leaking (yes I know I have just tempted fate), just a little rot at the back part of the sill on the driver's side, the rest was considerately replaced with box section by one of the previous owners.

The advantage with a even a late 300 is that most of the major issues would have already reared their head and been fixed. I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time! I think you'll get a lot of disco for £3.5K.

i have an r plate leaked through screen...this my 2nd disco and i have purchased the following since i got it. haynes manual, spanners ,trolley jack, axle stands, socket set, hub nut spanner ,oil pressure gauge, grease gun oil filler, rivet gun....discs every type of oil oil sensor exhaust battery filters and so on...so it dunt really matter how old it all depends if they have been looked after...by the way dont bother with haynes manual..just look at busters bits n bobs

I think you are mistaken to rule out DiscoII TD5. They are a much nicer road car to drive and whilst all cars have their "issues" - I firmly believe that TD5's don't have more than their fair share.

The problem is that some owners don't understand the concept of preventative maintenance. They won't spend any money until the car breaks down.

Air suspension is a classic example of this: like all things rubber the air springs deteriorate over time so it is now accepted wisdom to replace both rear springs every 5 yrs or as soon as you buy the car. This will avoid 95% of all suspension problems on Disco II.

Paying £3500 for a Disco I TDi 300 will be a very fast way of losing money.

Truth is that even a nice tidy '98 model is only worth between £1500 and £2000 tops, but there are loads out there where sellers are asking £3500. Well they can ask what they want - but they are NEVER WORTH £3500, it's a 12 yr old car ffs !!

Get yourself a nice clean TD5, year 2000-ish, under 100,000mls fsh £2500 and buy a HawkEye diagnostic tool as well for £250 and you'll be set up for years of comfortable driving.

Good luck in your search, have patience and have your money ready for when the right one comes along,
Dave

.....i dont want a td5 ive too many horror stories bout susupension etc,

Without any intention to intrude in nobody's wishes but i want to reinforce what thebiglad just said coz i love my Td5 inspite of other "horror" stories. IMHO the "etc'' could be the horror part of it coz the suspension is a quite easy to fix and not too expensive system with many benefits. As a curiousity if we check the engines part of this forum we'll see that at 300tdi section there are 142 threads with 922 posts and at Td5 there are 110 with 778 posts(and nobody is posting there just for fun i suppose.....or statisticly could be hundred of other reasons) .... the Td5 ones are most of them diagnosticable with a scantool(see thebiglad again) and after that quite easy to fix in return 300tdi's have more hard mechanical or electrical (uncoverd by diagnostic tools) failures.....(i.e an MFU fault on Disco 1 is much harder to diagnose than a BCU fault on Disco 2 which is totally scannable and programable....besides i'd never choose an engine with timing belt instead of one with chain)...the rest, body/axles/chassis defects are most of them similar at both cars.

Again, i dont want to offend any Disco 1 owner or to start a dispute just wanted to make a point on the fact that when it's about failures u can find horror storyes about any car .............and the Disco 2 is much more confortable with at least similar off-road capabilities.

IMHO............... my Td5 has 190.000km and never had big problems(thank God)......but i gave a big importance for the preventative maintainance and never pushed it to the limit.

In my experience the 300tdi is a more reliable motor than TD5.
Pays your money, takes your choice.:)

and what is your experience of the td5 as nearly every post you make is negative to them, has a td5 abused you when you were young? perhaps you'd better stick to your 19J for trouble free motoring:D

I've had a few, perhaps you should stick to your TD5 until it lets you down:eek:

Hi guys,300tdi or td5? well they're both landy's and most of us luv em. We have fun fixing em,:) breaking em  and fixing them again. ;). You would be hard pressed to find a minta around the 97 to 2000 ish ,without some work done or to be done on it, after all some are over 12 plus years old . [unless your really lucky].Fixing em is fun though and we all learn alot from the work we do on em [ yep with all the swearing an all]. its a landrover thing thats all .keep em running..

if youve had a few you would expect after the first 1 you would know what to look for to avoid major breakdowns in the future, all machines breakdown eventually and what we do to repair it goes a long way to deciding how long that particular repair lasts, for instance

using genuinne parts instead of patten or secondhand will increase longevity, regular servicing/preventative procedures, and when you think of the punishment most landies receive whether towing 3 tons or offroading a certian degree of failure is to be expected, but having driven a 300tdi before purchasing the td5 i can say the td5 is a far superior engine and with a few low cost options such as chipping is made even better

My 300tdi is more reliable and more powerful than previous Td5's I've had.
Just a few simple mods, large intercooler, pump tweak and turbo acuator tweak and they certainly go very very well and will give your long hassle free service if maintained.
There is also the added bonus of running 100% waste or straight oil (veg, hydraulic, engine etc)
TD5's offer a slight improvement in smoothness but are not dependable and in my opinion offer less real world performance even in standard form,

have a word with shifty he runs his td5 on old engine or gear oil or hydrolic and i doubt that with yer tweaks you'd get anywhere near a td5 for the same money spent on engine mods

After owning both I know I can:D
well enlighten us, how for £650 do you get 180BHP from your 300tdi cos if you can you should open a tuning business, whereas on a td5 its a chip at £225 and the large intercooler£425, with more power available if you want to spend more

why all the fuss about performance enhancement - if you want a fast car by an Evo not a disco, having compered my bosses 51 plate D2 and my 97 D1 I would have to say that, yes the D2 is more refined, powerful and all round "nicer" BUT, and this is a big but, my D1 has less to go wrong, is smaller (less rear overhang) so has a slightly better departure angle and as has been said will complain less when run on a variety of poor quality fuels.

Agreed :) I love the TD5 D2 and it is a much better car to drive, more power, smoother etc but it was the electrics that kept me away. I bought my 300tdi after owning a p38  and now land rover + electricals =:eek::eek: in my head

If I had looked into it a bit more (nanocom) then I may well have bought a TD5 but would probably take more care when it comes to scratchy lanes, ruts & water.

Oh well theres always next time :D

go vehicles have a nice p reg theyre in leeds email a chap called oliver i sold em a standard bumper cos it has a beut winch on it
