I have a large 20l can of formula 1 10/40 semi synthetic API SG/CF does anyone know if this is ok for my 300tdi as the oil does not state petrol or diesel on it and have no idea what I bought it for!! thanks guys

Should be API CE or better for diesel and petrol engine is API SH or better to quote Haynes. I have often searched for the best oil for the 300tdi, and have come to the conclusion that to preserve an old engine that has covered many thousands of miles it's better to stick to a thicker oil. I use 15/40 mineral API CH4 from TQX and change every 6000 miles.

sorry I know nothing about the lettering api cf etc so does it go C,, a b c d e f etc so anything above e is ok?? or am i totally wrong lol and what does the SG mean?
so my oil is ok?

The API engine oil grades have moved on since SG or CF along with CE and SH they are now obsolete, so if your oil is those grades the oil could be over 10 years old, and engine oil has only a 4 year shelf life I believe.
I have 2 gallons of Duckhams Q and the same with Castrol GTX in sealed cans in the garage that's 35+ years old that I won't use.

So if you don't know any thing about API grading why not? Google... But let me help you and do it for you. http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html
