300tdi engine knocking

Just out of interest has anyone a vid of there engine sound when its running top notch..

only askin as i know diesels can sound a bit knocky a the best of times,, and helps to know what one should sound like when all is good..
 
Update time!

After much investigation it appears that the knocking from my engine is due to it eating itself from the inside. The piston in cylinder 1 is apparently slightly undersized so it's taking chunks out of the cylinder :(
So options are 1) engine rebuild 2) refurbed engine or 3) new engine with waranty. None of which are going to be cheap unfortunately

How do you know that? Have you taken the head off or has someone had an endoscope in each cylinder?

thats a weird diagnosis ,rebuild it but put pics up of strip down so we know actual condition
 
I ended up taking it to a local LR specialist as I didn't have the time because of work. They went through everything external on the engine but it was all fine. Next step was to take the cylinder head off. The piston is scored vertically as is the cylinder. They've measured both and the piston is 5thou too small, it's also worn the bearing on the crank through to the copper

The score in the cylinder would likely be caused by a broken piston ring, which may/could have been the source of the noise.
That being said, my previous 300Tdi had that same knock/tap noise from the day I bought it home at 302,000klm and still has it today with its current owner at just a shade under 500,000klm, it still starts and runs perfectly, clack-clacking away happily, so whatever causes the noise is not killing the engine.
 

I've got two comments - On the engine, I don't think they tell you enough about what they have done in their "remanufacturing process" - I would expect something along the lines of "brought within OEM specifications " on a number of items like compression etc., or.... a list of the new parts all their engines get - and it getting a new sump is not very reassuring - a new oil pump more so....

I suspect they might be a decent firm who don't know how to sell themselves, and they have got 100% feedback - I'd ask them for a reference or two from existing customers who have had one of their engines, AND been happy with it...

Second comment I'd make is about all the tracking info in the fleabay link.

5 thou too small were did they measure the piston at the bottom of skirt 90 degrees to the gudgeon pin?

I'll be honest I feel a long way out of my depth with this so can't answer your questions as I don't know. Hence it being at a garage rather than me doing it myself.
