Hey guys,

300Tdi, 96 Disco

Happened about 4 days in a row, starts up sound drives off as normal, I get 500 yards down the street and it cuts out, battery light comes on on dash board.
I then have to turn it over for about 10-20 seconds and it starts up again and after that there is no problems at all....

Any ideas?

I reckon you have a leak on a fuel pipe, perhaps at the fuel pump that is letting air in and causing the fuel to drain back to the tank. You manage to drive 500 yards on the fuel in the filter before it dies. The restart reprimes the system and you are off again....

....or something like that. My money is on a small leak in a fuel pipe somewhere that is letting air in over night but no fuel out.

strange it only happens in the morning, sits at work for 8-10 hours and it doesnt happen on my way home.
Like u say i wil put a new filter on and see how itgoes

cheers for help

Have you ever thought it might not be a mornin person :p... It may need a coffee first and a hour to come round :D:D:D

Check fuel filter and sedimenter, but I also agree that it's very likely a tiny airleak somewhere, but could equally be condensation, 'specially if it has an empty diesel tank!

Daft one, but check there's a cap on the fuel filler! Mate had similar, he'd left the fuel cap at the pump, rainy night, water in fuel tank, blocked sedimenter, crap running ... ;)

check quickly also that on the four injector pipes, that there is a metal clamp present that clamps them together in pairs, and that this clamp is tight! (Just down from the injectors on the side of the block). If this is missing or loose then these pipes can vibrate and cause cavitation of the fuel in the fuel injector lines.

Check leak of pipes, if these are letting air in they will allow the injection pump to drain the fuel back into the tank.

started up sound as a pound this morning and no problems at all, checked all pipes and connections on injectors, everything look ok, so simple fuel filter change seems to have done the job.

Thanks again

well after a few weeks of tatting about trying to resolve this problem I have finally ( hopefully ) found the problem.
Cleaned out and changed the seals on the sedimentor... no improvement
Replaced fuel filter.... no improvement
Found a small pin hole on one of the injector return pipe, replaced pipe... no improvement

and Today............... lifted the carpet in the boot, removed inspection plate to find a crack in the plastic flow elbow......! made a running repair with some putty for now, wont know until the morning if this has definately the problem but it stands a good chance.
I will keep you posted...

Thanks for your replies

well the problem is still there in a fashion!!!! god!!!!
I have had a look at the lift pump, when the ignition is off I have tried to pump the manual lever, when I do this there seems to be no pressure as i pump, the lever just moves up and down there seems to be nothing there, do you guys think this could be a problem? I think its not helping but once it has cut out in the morning and restarted then there is no problems at all which leads me away from the lift pump. crappy explaination I know but any advice please....?

The lift pump operates off a cam. If the cam is in the wrong position when you operate the lever then it wont work. Turn the engine over a bit and try again. Use a 27mm socket and a breaker bar on the nut that holds the crankshaft pulley to turn it half a turn, or flick it on the starter motor and hope it lands in the right place.
If the lift pump is knackered then usually the symptoms are lack of power going up hill, the FIP can "suck" through enough fuel usually but struggles underload, so it doesn't sound like a lift pump problem to me, but I wouldn't discount it

I'm wondering if you are barking up the wrong tree...seeing as you have "fixed" this twice now. I wonder if there is a problem with the fuel shut off solonoid.
