finally got my disco back on the road, 96 300tdi ES auto. was driving fine untill i went round a corner a bit quick, and piled on the power half way round. now the 'check engine' light comes on at idle, and the idle speed sits at around 1000rpm. if i touch the accelerator the revs drop to normal 600rpm and the light goes out. the light never comes on at anything other than idle and it drives perfectly. not sure if anything should happen, but with the engine running i unplugged the AFM to clean the plug incase this was the fault - nothing happened, no drop or change in idle speed or anything. could the AFM be the cause of the problem? or is there a way to read the fault codes for the check engine light like you can the ABS system?

thanks, Mark

only thing i ever heard of like this is the oil pressure switch.... the oil light would come on when on tickover, usually when the engine is hot - it goes out with a few revs...

yeah i had that fault when i got the car, new switch and all sorted.

cant work out what this fault is tho. when i do the paperclip test for the ABS the Check Engine light also flashes a fault code - but i cant find a list of the fault codes like there are for the ABS system. also what could cause it to rev slightly higher only at idle, and stop if i just touch the accelerator? im not increasing the revs, literally just a tiny bit of pressure and the light goes out and revs return to normal. wish i'd studied mechanics instead of panel beating
