Hi chaps I recently bought my first landrover defender 200tdi. At the same time a mate sold me all his landrover bits and amongst them where front and rear 300tdi 24spline axls in good condition !
To get my skills up u want to strip them both and refurb to a high standard I can imagine. There's some serface rust but can anyone suggest the best way of cleaning the casings so I can paint them. Also what's best paint to use for hardy finish? Do I need a primer?
I don't mind using the old wire brush but can I get them blasted or something? Cheers

Hello.

I am kind of doing the same thing at the moment, although to a lesser level. I am just going to clean it up, paint it and change the diff gasket (probably not in that order). If you want to go down the refurb route I think you would change the bearings, it is quite a big job, but there are some really useful threads on here.

As for prep, I am going to use a wire brush wheel on a drill, and a couple of angle grinder attached ones aswell as they are better.

The best thing to paint them with at the moment is rustoleum as it doesn't require primer, can be painted straight over rust and comes in a lot of colours.

Strip it down and find someone to sand blast them for you

The guy I used charged me £15 per axle, aint worth doing them yourself

Then get some rustloeum
