Hi,

This is my first post on the site....

I have a 300tdi Disco 1 auto and recently the kickdown cable would stick and not retract if it was extended. If it happened I would just stop and could manipulate the cable back by hand and if gentle with the throttle everything was ok..

This was fine till today and now I just cannot slide the cable back into the sleeve at all. There is no obvious sign of the problem and just wondered if anyone had experience. I wondered if it was a problem at the box end of the cable?

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks

you will need to swap cable ,which requires sump off and valve block , cable is secured to a sprung wheel cam, so you need to ensure spring is wound up when cables fitted so cable retracts after its pulled ,and throttle end has crimp about 1mm from cable sleeve

Thanks for the reply and it confirms my suspicion..

Is a cable change a job that is sensible to try and do on my driveway? I am fairly competent with the mechanics...

Cheers

if your competent and have the info and a 27 torx bit for valve block screws of which you will need info to just undo the correct ones (which have slightly wider heads)and ensure valve block is reseated so its about center on screw holes and is fitted aligned with valve and kick down cam

Thanks again, much appreciated and impressed with the quick response. It doesn't sound like a job that would cost too much at my small local garage........decision time!

Thanks

Yeah, I think I will as I am keen to do the job myself if for no other reason than to save money.....

Excellent, I will do. Going to order the cable and decision made, going to do it myself..... Ta.

"jamesmartin" are you out there?!!!!

I started the job tonight and although a bit fiddly and testing my patience all seemed to be going ok until the "cam" slipped on me while trying to wedge it. It is now fully rewound and just wondered how much of a disaster is this. What can I do to get the cam wound up to the correct setting?

Thanks again!!!!

Thanks yet again and that's a relief.........job will have to wait, the wrong cable has obviously been supplied as no matter how I route it it is still nearly 6 inches too short. Wednesdays job if the new cable arrives......
Enjoying the job although patience being tested just occasionally!!!

Will no doubt be back in touch!!!

Cheers...

That's the job done and enjoyed it. All made easier with all the advice. All I have to do is crimp the cable and test drive......
Last question, to crimp the cable, do I just "squeeze" the wee metal lump on the cable? I just don't want to do something wrong at this stage!!!

Ta....

Ok then........tried to take it for a drive but a couple of things!!!!!
The gear selection is supplying forward drive irrespective of where it is and the gearstick will not go all the way back to "1". Any suggestions
Thanks again...

Thanks again James...... Will disassemble again and take more care refitting the block. To be honest I never studied the "top" of the valve body, I just refitted. I suppose when I take it off and study it, I am sure it will be clear....

Tomorrow me thinks!!!!!!

Hi James, if you are available for further advice....

I have the valve body ready to go back on and the valve which sits against the selector cam, I assume it does not sit against the kickdown "wheel" at all. It's just that when I sit the valve body and try to position it against the selector cam it seems to be a wee bit to the side, not resting against the cam.. Does that make sense and if so do you know what I am doing....

Cheers again...

jamesmartin, job done and the mistake I made is so basic that I am embarrassed to admit to it but spending ages studying the valve body I noticed............the fork/lever for the selector. I hadn't connected it to the selector!!!

Learning exercise for me...

Thanks.
