hi
I have a 97p 300 auto with the maf sensor so must be edc,
Last year towing twin axle back from wales about 3hrs into journey and almost home I noticed temp gauge going up so put heaters on full blast and tried to ease of as much as poss(was on a slight incline, motorway) and after a few moments it came back down and ran fine, 10 mins later same thing again ran fine pretty soon by this time i was a couple of miles from home

Got back let idle for a while checking for anything obvious but nothing no leaks etc so never thought too much about it. that was last august since then the car is used daily and I have never seen the temp move
I have no signs of water in oil or oil in water no mustard looking stuff on filler cap or dipstick
My question is before i tow again at end of month does anyone have any experience of this or ideas as to what could of caused the rise??

Many Thanks for your advice in advance

What do you expect for such a cheap Disco?! :D

In all seriousness, take the rad off and make sure all the fins are in tact and not blocked. Give it a proper clean through.
Also check your viscous fan kicks in when it should.

As Mark said, check the radiator .. it might look good at the front, but the backside (engine side) blows out and loses fins ..

Don't forget it also incorporates the engine oil cooler too, so it's a little more important than many coolant filled rads!

hi guys
thanks for replies, i am pretty certain the thermostat is working as i changed it a few months back along with the antifreeze.

How do i check the vicous fan??

also if there were a few fins missing on rad would that cause this sort of rise in temp?

Many Thanks

I had the same thing on a 200 towing a heavy trailer, my own fault, I should have cleaned the rad out after wading. So start by cleaning out the fins, if the stat is ok maybe the water pump?.
Good Luck Kev

Same happened to my 200 Disco towing a twin axle with a tractor on it back from north Yorkshire.
No previous overheating at all and rad looked fine.
Couple of weeks later was towing my mates 90 back from Liverpool and the temp went up and radiator burst.

Fitted new rad off ebay and all fine again.

Hi guys
I decided to change rad, thermostat, top and bottom hose, bypass hose, p gasket, temp sender and water pump and gasket
and I think defo worth it rad looked f###ed and now the jobs all done car warmed up quicker and heater is as warm as toast much better than before.

so cooling system should now be sound fingers crossed
thanks to all who replied

cheers
