300 TDi Ticking/Tapping noise

My 300 Tdi has had a ticking/tapping noise since i've owned it.
I've now fully serviced it and fitted new cambelt kit and aux belts.
The noise only happens on deceleration.It doesn't do it on tickover or on acceleration so is a bit hard to diagnose.

All suggestions welcome please as the noise is annoying and i'd like to sort it out.

question ? did it do it before you fitted cambelt?

Yes,exactly the same.I was hoping after I fitted the cambelt it might of stopped.
Living in a dream world I suppose!

check all exhaust for leeks and the gaskets could be worn.

assuming tappets done, exhaust blow can sound bit like that if its a little one . check exh. gasket

Definatley not exhaust as since i've owned it i've put a complete new system on it including de-cat pipe.The noise was there before i put the exhaust on and is still the same now with the new system.

when did you last check the valve clearances ?

I haven't yet checked them but I was thinking if it was them surely it would make the noise on tick over and when you accelerate ?

I had similar once, check ALL exhaust joints are tight, mine was the exhaust pipe coupling to the manifold pipe. seems mine got a dent on the pipe and bent/knocked the alignment so it was leaking.
