Anywhere near 12 o'clock I have always placed my a 12, the jiggly thing is to allow any traped air in the system to escape as air rises to the highest point that's why it's at the top.. but you knew that

just get to household radiator air bleed valves - same size and with a "hot bleed" facility - oh and cheap too from B&Q.

No, but it is worth replacing them with a metal equivalent.....which I assume is MHM B&Q reference.

it is - i just used some plumbing ptfe tape around the thread - worked well for me

Just use hemp and boss white the old ways are the best, but don't put it hemp in a pipe and smoke it.

And there's me thinking the jiggle thingy is a hole to allow for a small bleed of water thro the thermostat disc so that the thermostat sensor is in a small flow of coolant and not in a stagnant pocket of coolant so that the sensor is able to sense the coolant temperature accurately and open as required.
It does bleed the air out as well.

If it is a Genuine one or a Waxstat ( same as genuine ) the little jiggle thingy is supposed to fit in the cut out . Regards Jonathan
