300 TDI Straight exhaust question.

Is it safe for the engine to run an open pipe fron the exhaust header straight back?

and if so how much louder is it and does it do anything to the performance?

As the turbo absorbs a lot of the noise its not over loud. I find my 200 tdi more responsive with just the centre box. Remember it is against the law and MOT standards to have a straight through.

Really ? cos mines passed its MOT with a straight thru de-cat system

id be interested to know how turbo absorbs noise ,i know why there is less

It is illegally to have an exhaust system that does not pass through a silencer box. So I originally had a straight through pipe and that was not acceptable. When I put the rear silencer back on it was deemed acceptable as the exhaust now passes through a silencer box. The lack of a middle box was not deemed a problem. To be fair it is a lot quieter with a back box on it without seeming to effect the performance.

I was stopped going through a local village at a police 'roadblock' doing vehicle safety and compliance checks. This is apparantly becoming very widespread. What was really interesting is that they did not bust my chops over the black and silver plates, they were more interested in the mechanical elements. The used big bomb disposal type mirrors to check the underside!!

I can confirm that a straight through pipe is illegal. I have been busted for it. If you search the thread you will see the sections of the road traffic act that apply.

You may have passed an MOT but that does not make it legal. I passed an MOT with mine and a tyre that you can see the steel bands on through the cuts....

I put just the back box on again from a NA engine and that was deemed acceptable. The noise with a straight through pipe is a bit of a cacophony as well if I am honest...

I have a straight through exhaust on my TD5. Its louder than not having a silencer obviously but not that loud. It reverberates like fook inside and sounds real loud but not that loud outside.

If you live somewhere quiet and you like your neighbours then dont get one. lol

I want a system that comes straight off the headers through the bonnet but UK law won't allow me to be ridiculous
