I am having a number of problems attempting to resolve ABS lights on with my 300Tdi, so I am tempted to stop this once and for all by removing the ABS totally. I have been told that all I need to do is remove the ECU and change over the brake master cylinder etc. Can anyone please reassure me that is all and what if anything I should do also?

If you're in the UK I'd be a bit careful before you try and do this. Your car will be listed with having ABS and you may run into problems at MOT time. Might be worth asking around before you commit yourself.
Technically, I wouldn't see much of a problem, I don't think you would even need to change the master cylinder. You would have to do a bit of plumbing with the brake pipes to get the correct arrangement without ABS.
 
Why not fix the fault?

Or get someone to take a look.

With the money and hassle you spend swaping the master cylinder and getting new brake pipes made up, it may only cost an hours labour.

If however your minds made up, then the only parts that should need changing are the mastercylinder and the plumbing. basically your taking the abs pump out of circuit.

But like others have said the abs light should come on with ignition and go out at speeds over 5mph. If the MOT mans clued up he'l know this. a way round it is to connect the abs light to the charge light. if it lights up and goes out when started then most MOT testers will be OK.

Unless he has a look on his chart on the wall to check the operation.

We had a problem with the ABS on one of our 300's so I disconnected the electrical connector on the ABS modulator/pump on the nearside inner wing and we've had no more problems since.
 
Thanks for all your comments. I have already spent too much at 'repairers' who resolve it until basically I drive for a few days and the problem returns! They all say that 'it is a very difficult symptom to get rid of without a lot of time being spent' and of course that means more money. They have been through all the usual culprits such as reset the sensors, replace one or two and the problem still exists and on the 300Tdi they are not cheap. Hence I want to get rid of the problem totally. So I will try all your recommendations.
