Gidday from down under!
Got a problem with my power steering pump. 300 Tdi engined 110.
Noisy when turning steering wheel. Checked under vehicle and ATF coming from, I presume lower pressure return hose, to holding tank. Slow drip from somewhere. Is it terminal. Checked Busters Guide, but alas different type of pump.
Any constructive help would be much appreciated.:crazy_driver:

Was low on atf, so refilled. Started car and turned wheels l&r, still noisy. Checked under car and cleaned, small amount of atf coming from above where hose connects. Holding tank seems to be holding ATF, but gets airated and rises up and slightly overflows.
Does this help?

air should come out through res eventually unless pump sucling air or relief valve stuck shut ,box piston seals leaking internally, not normally necessary but sometimes running pipe from bleed screw to res helps but dont open screw much

Sorry to revive an old thread, but before I go out there and crawl around the car in the rain I wanted to see if I'm on the right track.

My power steering is mooing (like a cow that is) a bit when I start the car and turn the steering wheel as I drive off. My first step was to check the fluids, but as I was crawling under the car the other night I noticed some fluid on a big hose on the right hand side of the engine, viewed from the underside. I was basically lying under the driver's seat looking up under the engine. Is this fluid something to do with the power steering?

Thanks!

if its red yes

is that your only symptom, first thing when starting alternator will be under pressure and any extra work from pas pump may well be noticeable

Yes, as far as I can tell, the only anomaly is that there's a mooing sound. I'll keep checking whether it's only at start up, or if it's any stationary steering movement. Thanks, jamesmartin!

I assume you have checked your serpentine belt is good and that the belt wear indicator on the tensioner is still within limits (i.e. the casting mark on the tensioner arm is to the left of the one on the tensioner body?) remember power steering pump pulley is driven by the back of the belt and not by the grooved side so any contamination (oil etc) won't help things.

No I've not checked the serpentine belt yet. In fact, I've not checked much, as I don't really know where to start - well, I know now. Thanks! :D

I'm going to go out and tinker, hopefully I'll have time to look into this. I did listen extra carefully and the mooing sound appears at all times when doing slow high angle steering maneuvers. I.e not only when the car is freshly started. I get a slight vibration through the steering wheel too.
Anyway, will have a bit of a looksee if I get time today.

Thanks all!
