Hi all, well yet another problem. As the title says really, the engine oil level is rising on its own which is a tad alarming to say the least. I fitted a replacement engine in my disco last november, just before i bought it from my mate. From then till last month it had only been run on diesel. thenthis month veg/diesel mix. The oil level has been rising regaurdless of what fuel was in it. There is alittle coolant loss also, but its hard to say whether or not its the head gasket or the rad as it has a pin hole in it, and i'm waiting on my new rad to be delivered. I have heard of the td5 engine doing this, which was the result of the fuel galleries in the head cracking, and alowing fuel to seep into the oil, but never on a 300/200 tdi engine. Anyways any help would be great.
many thanks
alex

Ring gumming from glycerides in the VO ? Much bandied about on the veg oil forum . Been talked over here too . Some say yes , others no . The apparent fix for this is to use a wall paper steamer to pump steam into the air intake....at what point I forget .....never tried it myself so I couldnt say , others say yes , some a big no

my fuel pump has also been tweeked buy last owner or 3 so wondering if its causing higher pressure inside the cylinders and forcing the fuel passed the rings, either that or the rings are shot, as the engine does smoke abit. More so when cold, or if it hasn't been started in a few days. **** i'm going to have to replace valve stem oil seals aswell after typing that

Try some Stop Smoke first ....I have recovered leaky stem seals that way a couple of times , not a perma-fix , obviously , but might give you some breathing space

head gasket has been suspect on this engine for a while so may aswell replce everything while the head is off. just wanting to know 100% whats causing the oil level to ris, as it was doing it on diesel aswell before veg oil

you can tell if its rings by removing oil filler cap and seeing if it breathes heavy ,check lift pump isnt leaking into cam gallery ,does it smoke (leaking injector)is oil clean not emulsified

Hi matey ok so yes it does smoke when first started, and when you change gear. There isn't any smoke or fumes from the filler cap. Lastly the oil is normal other than needing an oil change due to it being black.

Thanks for all other replies upto now

I havent really seen smoke from tdi engine oil fillers , its more a "put your palm over the hole and feel for the huffing pressure" sort of thing , where crankcase comp is concerned .

would the injector pump being tuned cause any extra compression in the cylinders, and force fuel passed the rings. Don't know how much its be turned up by yet until i open it up and take alook

it is possible to split pistons if air and fuel increased too far ,but excess fuel would if injector was working correctly give black smoke, does it run poor

first start in the morning its alittle choppy on the revs for about 30 seconds then its fine, does smoke but not all the time. and when it does doit, it more like apuffing than a stream. black smoke on diesel, blue smoke on veg oil

ok so need to get them tested or swap them for known good working ones. Like i said thou its not everytime, can go days without the heavy smoking, then it will have a bad couple of days then stop again. Its down on power alittle bit. the worrying thing at the moment thou is the oil level rising

Lift pump on my Disco was leaking out of small hole on the side. Took it off to change it and there was fuel passing through into the engine. Didn't notice a rise in oil But that. could be due to the fact I had an oil leak anyway through the breather again. So sorted all that and now she runs like a good un. I would check lift pump before pulling the top off of her. Good luck.

I had a 'puffing' on mine and it turned out it was the head gasket gone.. you could feel it at the back of the head and the bulkhead was a bit oily too
