3.9V8 auto to manual conversion issue

Hi all.

I am putting a 3.9 EFi Range Rover V8 in my 90 and have a problem with converting the engine to fit the manual box.

I have removed the auto box and everything else but need to remove this aluminium lump and starter ring (sure it will come off when this ally lump is off).

I have asked on another forum and got one reply saying "whack it and it will come off".

Not to say that isnt true but i have hit it with all my mite with a hide mallet and its budged a mm.

Any help would be great as i am stumped at the moment :doh:
 
Should come off with thump. Think there is an adaptor ring on the end of the crank when the flywheel comes off. Dont forget that you many need to fit a spigot bearing into the end of the crank.

Auto...Sorry but that for old men :)

I know Autos are great off road but i have never got on with them personally. Plus i have just bought a gearbox from Ashcrofts to do this :)
 
Spot on.

There are pros and cons to both.

I have to admit it wasnt as easy a decision as i made out. The range rover autos are the best i have ever driven and with comfort in mind i could live with it. but for a noisy, chunky defender it had to be a clunky, stirring soup manual ;)

Sods law as i bought the manual box and then removed the V8 to find a recon ZF 4 speed behind it. If i had known i may have made a different decision :rolleyes:

Great minds think alike.

I gently warmed it today and hey presto it came off.

So i have a follow up question (I do apologise).

I have a flywheel but no bolts.

What size?

I am guessing Imperial but what?

Flywheel bolts are high tensil so no good just fitting standard steel as they may sheerunder load
Go to landrover and just get new ones they not gonna be much and will be right first time

I'm looking to buy a RRC but the one Ive set my eyes on is perfect in every other way but I'm going to be using it for an expedition in a year or two and wont be able to do anything with an auto transmission if it breaks down(12,000 miles driving/towing and quite a lot in places where an autobox I doubt would be replaceable)

I do not have the technical knowledge on how to service one or even fault diagnose auto box's properly so I thought it would be a better precaution just taking the time to convert it and learn a little more about the transmission system if things do go wrong.

The one im looking at is a 300tdi so I need to remove all the power sap that is possible of which is an auto transmission.

Can anyone advise me on if the auto transmission would be up for the job after a recon or just be better fitting a recon'd manual.


If so would there be any chance you could try and document a little more on your conversion I know its a little cheeky to ask but If I do go down that route it would mean a lot.

My best bet I think depending on the ease of the conversion is just to sit tight with my money and wait for a good manual 300/200tdi as its a buyers market.

leave the auto alone it wont go wrong
 
Just fit the Auto Box - don't tamper with it - just drive it and enjoy.

If it goes wrong, a replacement from a scrap yard will cost you £250 and will get you going again.

Looks like im going for the auto but will do the conversion at some point, waiting for it to fail in the middle of no where and thousands of miles from the nearest box really isnt an option.

Now need a link for a air to spring conversion page for the classic and product page or recommendation to one (late model 300tdi with the factory autobox)

Also do I need dampers inbetween the coils as well as most of the kits ive looked for just sell coils.
