Hi All

Oil change yesterday and I thought I`d poke my little pinky in the sump hole as you do and see what I could feel. Lo and behold I found a nut after wiggling it thru.

Engine was rebuilt ` few years ago`, tho` to what extent I do not know but hopefully the basics were done including new camshaft. I do know that it runs very well and with no issues. Therefore the nut out the plug hole I can only assume got there as part of the rebuild by one of those little mistakes that can happen.

I only wonder what it is from, can you identify it?

No prizes, but I may be at the meet in June to show off my wagon. ... errrm I mean my D1V8OffRoader.

Thats a big end nut get the sump of asap youll do major damage
Hmmm. Thanks ALL.

Its been running like that for at least 10,000 miles I guestimate, or rather that`s how long ago the rebuild was, but don`t know how long the nut has been laying at the bottom of the sump.

Doesn`t seem likely a `spare` big end nut could `fall through` from the top, really.

I will remove the sump and examine ASAP.

Cheers!

Big end nut could quite easily. Might not have fallen off 10'000 miles ago could have fallen off since last oil change.

If theres no harm done ill feel alot more confident in my own... hope its just a spare that fell into the sump

In my humble and by comparison I`ve little doubt rather inexperenced opinion, a rebuild might infer something `total and all inclusive` avec big ends, in which case how has it come off and what else is loose? And it would also include a not unreasonable expectation that the sump was cleaned out prior to reassembly so nothing should have been there. That is of course if the rebuild was a full one and not something else that allowed the nut to appear from `a mistake` en route.

Weighing it up and not least with all your informed opinions I now deduce that my earlier presumption that it was a `spare that dropped thru` might well be false.

Maybe I`ve been lucky James & Co but I`ll be taking no chances and it`ll have to be checked.

Thanks James, Ian, Cool and Flat.

1st Peugeot dealer recomended to leave the broken plastic end from the dipstick in the engine sump.
Second time it snapped dealer (a new one) is having the sump off as its not fit to drive.
Not my issue as its a company 3008 hybrid and not my bill but does go to show how opinions and risk considerations finish.
If it's not broke I would not try to fix would be my feeling after 10k miles.

They gave me a Bmw m sport 1 seires hire car so lost the Peugeot dealerships number and blocked it on my mobile

If its not broke would be my normal take on things, but the difference here is that I don`t know how long that nut has been sitting in the sump for; could be 10,000miles and several years after somehow falling in sump as spare but not missing from any conrods, 5000 after coming loose but no harm yet, or fell off last Weekend just before the oil change was done. Without `discool`s clever endoscope suggestion readily to hand its too big a risk to assume all is okay so off the sump must come.

This is my D1V8LPG Offroad mantruck after all and if anything should happen to it, well, life just wouldn`t be the same again

Thing is you don't access the big ends from the top so it's not something that's dropped down while working on the top end. You'd have to be pretty slapdash to refit a sump without at least wiping it clean.
