Im looking into buying a 4x4 and being young, will be 18 when i do come to buying one, cost is a big factor in my decision in the purchase. I'v been looking at various different ones but i have to say that the discovery has to be my favourite, our family have all ways had landrovers and mainly diesel discos. One i'v spotted is a 1994 v8i converted to duel fuel lpg with 75k on the clocks for £3k, which is about what i would be looking to spend and iv got some insurance quotes and they aren't really any more than i would be paying for some thing like a diesel 306. What i want to know is what are the running costs like on a lpg v8 auto disco, what sort of mpg would i be looking at and is it really going to be getting any better mpg than a tdi, also what is the maintenance costs like on a v8? (i would be able to get it done a bit cheaper than normal as have a friend who is a mechanics teacher at a college.) I do know it is obviously going to cost more to run than a cheap little hatch back but i do really want a 4x4 and with the cost of lpg and what i have read about the claimed mpg of v8 discos i should be getting the equivalent of about 38ish mpg.
Would appreciate your help people, thanks!

The V8 lpg i had did about22 mpg but you have to take into account lpg costs which is cheaper but going up steadily! Also make sure you get a certificate of instalation for the gas, on some of them the tank is in the boot this cuts down dramatically on space i prefer torpedo tanks underneath but this reduces ground clearance, and they are generally smaller if you can only get 60ltrs in 2 35ltr tanks at 20ish mpg you'll be filling up every 200 miles remember to allow for gas expansion a 120ltr tank in the boot will only take 100 ltrsish. i now have a tdi and they are more torqy and do about 30mpg although a consensous on here is 15- 40mpg!!!!!!!! good luck

how was maintenance on your V8,compared to now with your diesel:confused:.
surely you dont lose any ground clearance,do you Know Exactly How much?:)
(using Torpedo tanks) PS... did you get the gas conversion done or did you buy it already fitted TTHHHAAAAAAAAAAAANNXXXXXXXXXXX:cool:

The lpg was a classic range rover but similar in mpg , it did affect clearnce but only if you are canning on green lanes, i just think it's easier to service a diesel.:D

hi ive had two 300 discos on gas loads of power and grunt loverly sound , crap on fuel our average mpg was 13 to the gallon any one who says more is not in the real world or must have feathers on thier feet ,so thats 26 ish on gas, also the v8 is prone to head faliure ,overheating etc ,both ours went ,at fairly low miles approx 70k ,also prone to back fireing on gas so check for air box held together with cable ties ,would i have a v8 again no probably not but it was fun ,for 3k you would get a half desent 300 tdi with approx 100k on it,that would be my addvice good strong reliable engine our last 300tdi had 190 k on it still run fine ,hope this helps mark.

Oh i agree with Markbones mine blew the head gasket ****ing hot water all over wifey!!!! however still got it home 58 mile pulling my caravan in 4 hours!!!!!!!!! and sold it for what i bought it for. GO TDi 200K MILES easypeasy
