3.9 V8i squealing / burning problem

Hello, I don't know if anyone can help but I'm having a few problems with my recently bought 97 Disco 3.9 v8i h(non-aircon).

I have a problem with the belt / auxiliaries. The belt was squealing when I bought the vehicle but I had put it down to the belt tensioner. Soon after purchasing the vehicle the alternator went which prompted me to change it along with the belt tensioner and the belt. The squealing persisted and I noticed that bits of black were burning from the belt and sticking to the alternator casing. I then changed the water pump hoping this would solve the problem but it hasn't.

Could this mean it's the power steering pump or could it be the crankshaft pulley? Or am I still barking up the wrong tree?

Any help much appreciated.

My 3.5 squealed like a pig until I changed all the belts.

try roughing up the pullys too

There is only one belt on mine, which is buring when running. I think it's got to be crank bearings? I hope I'm wrong.
I've chaged;
*Belt
*Belt tensioner
*Alternator
*Water pump

Do ya reckon it's worth chasing around? As you can see from my picture what I've done with a 90 and a disco was my nest project. If it's a new engine I can do it but you only spend so much on one engine.

Can't see how the crank bearings would burn the belt! I take it that it is the fanbelt you are talking about?

Have you got the right belt and the right amount of play on it, i.e. the correct belt tension?

Yeah there is only one belt on mine. I'm sure it is routed right and that the parts are ok. I have a new alternator, belt, water pump and belt tensioner. I can't see how it is the power steering pump but surely the crank would knock if it was out?

I've only replaced the belt that I have with the same that there was.... What should I have ? I have a PK7 1853 on it at the moment

is it a serpentine belt system then?

Looks like only one belt for a non AC 3.9 that's ERR4461, the LR parts book calls it a Pollyvee belt where as this link calls it a serpentine belt. Serpentine Belt for Land Rover Discovery 1 V8 ERR4461, ERR4623, ERR5579 - 1996

Are the pulleys in line?

Ie someone hasn't put too many washers behind the pas pump or something?

Pics required for this one mate, will be a simple fix.

Yeah that's the belt Ive just replaced. At least I now know I've replaced it with the right belt! I can't see how it can be routed any other way so that can't be the problem. It must be something else...

Hmm that's a good point Mr Noisy, I didn't think of checking that. I just presumed the auxiliaries were a straight bolt on / off swap. A job for next weekend now there's no evening light!
