3.9 efi fuel regulator

has anybody had a fuel regulator give problems. my 3.9 has a very intermittent problem where it drops a couple of cylinders (well it's like a missing problem) and i get a strong smell of fuel in the cab. the problem lasts less than a minute and then will be fine for days so i am struggling to find issue. i have eliminated electrical as a cause but the strong fuel smell makes me think it has to be fuel so would a regulator be intermittent?

Fuel regulator seems a bit unlikely, I think I would be looking for a leak in the fuel pipes, start at the back at the tank and work forward. The misfire is going to be more difficult to diagnose as it could be injection or ignition, you'll need to dig in to both systems.

some bodgy wiring shorting to ecu i think
