hiya,my disco has 125000 on clocks, its in need of a bit of tlc(new shocks, springs etc)also i,ve noticed it a little lumpy at low rpm.my thoughts are it needing new camshaft/tappets/timing chain.how difficult are these to change?i,m fairly mechanically minded but its just this big motherfunky of a crankshaft pulley bolt that sends shivers down my spine.any tips much appreciated.cheers craig

what makes you think its the camshaft etc.

its got similar symtoms to my other 3.9 on lpg.when you first switch it over to lpg it hesitates and you sometimes get a bit of a backfire, also it runs very lumpy in low revs.everything else i.e is new plugs, leads rotor etc, timings bang on.my other disco had 117000 miles on it when i changed camshaft it was totally foooked, replaced with one new camshaft and it was like driving a new car:)

To undo the crankshaft pulley, we used a 4ft bar on the socket and someone inside the car with their foot on the brake and in top gear.

Same to tighten up, 200lb ft by memory.

You can do it on a D2 with the fan off.

Why does everyone assume that the camshaft life is shortened on LPG???

The engine runs cleaner on LPG, thus less oil contamination etc. I can't see why it should affect the camshaft at all.

Dirty oil is the biggest killer of cams and followers by far.

the disco i bort recently has 100,000 miles on and the lgp was fitted in 2000 the engine is sweet as a nut... for now lol

That doesnt sound like much for your money should I be worried? the clock says 50,000 but I recon its done 150,000 and I can here a little cam noise on my 1990 v8 rangie.
