3.5 V8 timing

Hi guys and gals just got myself a 1989 110 project was just wondering if there is an idiots guide to timing the engine?

Also is there any common faults with them ticking over as i seem to have to use the choke for ages before it will tick over, and then its lumpy and rough sounding

I had a tickover problem with my 3.9, its on this forum somewhere, took me ages to find the problem and it was the centrifugal advance inside the distributor. Fitted a second hand distributor, set the timing as per haynes manual and she is like new!!
