hi colin, i don't know why you didn't get much response. i always find i get very good advice from the fellas on here. usually its spot on too!!

i don't think i'd have still got the car if it wasn't for people here!!!!

when did the serpentine engine start bieng fitted in the classic then? i'm only using a classic engine as i have found one fairly cheap. if it doesnt fit then its pointless using it.

Hi, I had this reply from Martin (E-Bay name -r-r-parts-ltd) he informedme that the surpentine is fitted from 1994 Soft Dash Models Range Rovers and the 300 Style Discoverys, this last model, Im not sure what that looks like or what year they where. Colin

righty, found one. but the car has no keys. its a fair price and could do with it looking at if anyone is in the north west of manchester area before i travel all the way up there to look and rescue it.

Hi, Gav, dont you want this vehicle or is to far for you to travel, manchester isnt that far for me, can you give me more info ( miles, has he manged to get it running, MOT, price. Colin

no it's only 70 miles but i wanted someone to look at it to see if it was the correct one and if it was ferked as best they could see. i'm picking it up on tuesday. phoned fella and arranged the deal on the understanding that it runs. will let you know how it goes

righty i have found the engin, its from a disc mor n reg, its the serpentine engine but when i look on rave cd it has the distributor, is this the engine i need? does it fit what do i need to swap over?

If yer swapping the timing covers over it shouldn't matter.
Why worry about it anyways cos you'll be using the coil packs along with the heads from the P38 motor I assume?

i wasnt sure if the dissy version and non dissy version are compatible, i'm soooo confused and panicking that it wont work etc etc!!

prolly just me bieng silly but i want my rangey back and can't take much more of this engin !!!! i'm not suicidal tho, not yet anyway!!!!

i think i'll be more comfortable when i have the two engins side by side!!

i was hoping to swap coil packs and heads

basically all you want is the bare block, crank, etc. you may have to change the cam to fit the later timing case. just have them both side by side, swap all the bits from your dead motor onto the 3.9 block and stop panicking!
use all of your current engine management system and all should be well as the engines are basically the same anyway.

i have no idea but i reckon you will tell me!!!

i thought the engines were the same! where are the crank and knock sensor?

i can drill and tap etc but how do i know they are in the right place, has anyone done it, is it straight forward. obviously i can find the ones on the old block and mount them in the same place on the 3.9 block????

this project is fraught with danger!!

can it be done the otherway by disabling em or will they even be needed if the enjin has dissy??

i wasn't panicking for a bit but now youve said this i am panicking again!!!

if you can drill and tap then no worries. you are not using the dizzy out of the 3.9 as you will be changing timing cases and your p38 engine does not use one. all you have to do is measure where the holes are on the 4.0 block and put them in the 3.9 block.
the engines are the same but not run the same. everything before ps8 used a conventional distributor and hotwire efi system (after 1991).
p38 use motronic or gems engine management.
so all you have to do is swap ALL the current stuff onto the 3.9 block.

why cant enjins all be like old cortina and granadas!!!!!! they were a piece of **** to fiddle with!!!!

i'm sure it will be easier in practice, what are the pitfalls, from what i have read the crank sensor is just a magnetic switch in principal is that the case? i mean how hard can it be to fit a crank sensor and a couple of knock sensors?

well i want my rangey operational and i dont want to pay £1500 for half an engine from some of the people that sell em as the car probably isnt worth much more with a good enjin in it!!
