Hello,
I have recently bought a 1998 Di Freelander, unfortunatly i had to remove the transmission so now i´m driving it 2wd and i have noticed that when i´m in 4th,5th gear and accelerating in the 1700-2000 rpm range i´m getting some real hard vibrations.
So my question is, where comes that vibration and is it a way to remove it?
I´m sure this question have already been responded but with all the threads here i´m kinda lost....
Any help would be apreciated!!!!

I've had similar symptoms, but only when rear props and vcu are removed.
Exactly the same, hard acceleration in the higher gears, (between 1800-2500 rpm),results in a 'rattling' sound (similar to an exhaust heat shield vibration).
Put the props back on for the winter, and its gone.
Think its something in the ird, but I'll live with it till it goes bang!!
Cheers,
Russ

why did you remove the prop, was the ird fubar'd?? It could be the crownwheel moving around as the shims or bearings are worn and the lack of drive on the pinion due to no prop allows the movement.

Not sure if that question was aimed at me!!??, but....I always remove the prop and VCU for the summer (when I dont need 4wd), as I am really wary of the delicate 4wd system.
The ird seems fine, 4wd worked perfectly in the recent snow.

No, it was aimed at the OP. Not having the prop on allows the back lash and/or play in the system to show up like this. I asked if the prop had been removed due to other symptoms/problems.

I sorted mine today.I usually remove complete drive train, props and vcu.I had it on for the past few weex because of the snow and ice.The grating sound I had in mondo disappeared ,but because my diff is leaking i had to disconnect asap.So this time I just removed the rear prop, its never run smoother. That grating I got in mondo ,when the IRD was sending more power to the rear was being taken up ,by the free moving vcu,or so I think.

By leaving the vcu in situ ,you keep a lower centre of gravity. Not as fast as complete removal, but alot less messing and a very smooth ride.

Interesting observation. Is yours a 1.8 with the damper fitted to the VCU, if so this would explain it. If not the large inertia of the VCU might cause it to vibrate more.

Or the front shaft is keeping the output flange in line and preventing the IRD from waving in the wind? :)
