2WD back to 4WD

Hey guys. Had my 2001 Freelander for 8 months now and I love it to bits. I recently took it in for an MOT and it passed with flying colours. The only problem is someone in the past had turned it into a 2WD. It still runs great but I'm looking to start off-roading and need it to be a 4x4. I'm just wondering what systems am I needing to replace and how much will it cost me to buy them. My brother in laws a mechanic so he'll install them for me. I know its hard to say without seeing the car.
Everything's still installed minus the rear prop shaft. Do people generally remove the prop shaft just in case or is it because the VCU has failed?.

Some people remove the prop to try and improve fuel consumption (or use that as an excuse ) but as you say its much more likely that the VCU has failed or the IRD. 1st step is to source a rear prop, fit it then test your VCU and take it from there

It's only the rear prop shaft that's gone. Everything else is still there. If the VCU is still attached d'you reckon it's still usable?

do a torque test on it

I wouldn't risk it but a short mile or do will show of its a VCU or IRD problem that made the previous owner change it. £300 for a recon VCU fitted from Bell Engineering and a breaker for the prop.

Just do it .You dont want to get stuck on a hill ,being overtook by a ****ty little ford ka .

put the rear prop on and then complete the VCU test as per this link

if all ok keep trucking if not leave the rear prop off till you can replace the VCU or IRD
