Hi all, thinking of putting a 2" lift on my disco, this maybe a stupid question, but how much will it ruin the handling of the car? and will it still go under 2metre heigh restrictors ?

Thanks all

Huh?

Your asking how much higher you disco will be if you add 2" to the suspension?

Measure the hieght of your Disco, and add 2" if that is less than 2.1m it will fit....?!?!?

Or am i missing somthing?

This method can be repeated for the wheels/tyres, you know the tyres sizes so just work it out?

Hi Ben, if you fit +2" springs you will raise the C of G which means it's more likely to be roly-poly.

That's ok if you drive accordingly. However, if you have an accident and the police are called and note that you have raised suspension, questions WILL be asked.

"Which competent authority did the work?" - "Oh you did the work! And are you qualified and certified to do this?" etc etc".

If your insurance company gets wind of the police report you could be in bother as they will seek out any opportunity to avoid liability. If they deny liabilty then you are not insured and you will get nicked - be careful.

Are you absolutely sure you NEED to do this?

I dont really need to , but my insurance company are happy for me to do whatever as long as it doesnt increase bhp, or top speed :) , i do want to take the disco off road light off road, main reason for thinking about a lift if i have 2 underslug lpg tank, dont fancy damaging/ setting one off like a rocket lol

Will bust out tape measure later, cars not at home, was just wondering of anyone has done and knew height, most interested in how it will affect ride / handling

Look on your visor - all the heights are there, for normal height, with roof bars and then if sunroof open...

From the manual, it states the height is 1914mm but no mention if that includes roof bars etc...

But from that height, 2" is 50mm, so added together you get 1964mm. But I am sure it will heigher than 2.1m if new tyres are going on it too

I have a 2" lift and light bar and I can go under 2.0m barriers with clearance, my wheels and tyres are standard size, my CB ariel twangs a bit though when it springs back as thats on the light bar.

The ride to me was way improved over the old suspension. I have had no problems since doing the lift over a year ago. I use it mainly as a road car but do go off road occasionally.

I have just this week put my disco in for a mock MOT as its due next month and I wanted to make sure it passes. The only things it needs are a wheel bearing and possibly a new brake caliper. 1 advisory caused by the lift is the rear anti-roll bushes are twisted but still ok. Everything else is fine.

Following on from Biglad's point, can anyone answer this?

If I fit a 2in lift myself, and the vehicle subsequently passes an MOT, would that be sufficient to satisfy the police that the suspension was roadworthy?

I understand that the MOT only declares the car to be "good" on the date it's issued, and that the need to notify the insurance company about a mod is something different altogether. Just wondering whether the MOT test would pick up on a suspension mod and therefore fail or pass it as appropriate.

Many thanks

If its fitted correctly then it will pass an MOT, if you haven't declared it to the insurance company has nothing to do with the test or the tester or plod. The only time you will be in trouble is if you have an accident and then insurance will be void. Declare it.

This is not a matter of mot compliance or not.

Imagine you have an accident and someone is injured. The police will be involved. If there is a subsequent court case the police will be asked if anything on the vehicle could have affected the car's ability to me normal safety required for running on the roads.

Imagine also at this court hearing that you are asked what qualified person installed this lift kit and why. You tell them you did it because you wanted to off-road.

The prosecution then asks you to furnish your engineering report which identifies the tests you made on your vehicle, to ensure it handles safely in it's modified condition - now you're bûggered. So he goes for the jugular "So Mr off-roader, you modified your vehicle so that you could play in the mud at weekends and make no effort at all to ensure your vehicle was still safe to run on the roads. Your selfish behaviour created a time bomb which ultimately went off and cost the lives of Mr Smith and his entire family".

Then comes the civil hearing where "your recklessness caused the death blah blah blah and you will pay compensation to the dependants of £500,000. House gone, family gone and who knows - job gone.

If you think this is far-fetched check out the story of a 110 owner who modified his own vehicle, which ended up in a stream after losing control and cost the lives of his own children. He ended up in prison and will most likely never get car insurance again.

I forsee all modifications on vehicles which could affect the handling and safety, being banned completely.

Just think about the consequences before you make a costly mistake.
