2a restoration..PIC HEAVY!

So, after being crippled with hay fever the last week or so I haven’t wanted to do anything when I’ve got in from work other than lock myself into a hermetically sealed room. I never usually suffer with it but the last week or so its been terrible. Any road, Landy!

I got to do a bit on Friday and then a little more today. Front end is stripped down now. Wings are off. Front panel and rad too! The front panel wants some attention. I’ll post some pics up specifically of that once I get going with it. Anyway, here is how she is sat now. Bulkhead wants a little bit, not so bad though!

Ah memories... Just finished a 4 year rechassis of my SIII SWB, but seeing your SII in bits reminds of the time. Here's my thread if you want to have a ganders, there might be so nugget from one of the old hands here that helps you along.

Sorry I didn’t take the time to do the write up on those previous pics. I’ve been having quite the time lining my bulkhead up before I start welding. I had been measuring off of the top of the chassis outriggers at their extremities to the top of the bulkhead. Likewise with the rear tub. I couldn’t get it to measure correctly and sit level. I have since realised that the outriggers are not quite level. I think it’ll all be jiggle-able. The bulkhead-chassis bolt holes in the outriggers aren’t level. I assume (hope) that they’re like that to correct the outrigger level issue. Only around 1/4” out but enough to make me scratch my head for a bit and feel quite thick! I assumed it would all be spot on.
Photo doesn’t show it too well, I got fed up of looking at a tape measure and sprit level by the time I noticed. But I’m sure it’ll all be ok

Not doing anything with it today. But I am going to order some bits. I was planning on ordering an auto sparks loom, but they’re shut at the moment. I see craddocks sell one; are they good? Any pro’s or con’s to one or the other? If I buy a complete loom, is it complete? Or do I need to buy any extra bits?

I drilled them out them out the other day. I loosely fitted the wings/bonnet/front panel. Just to see if it would help me with the alignment issues I was having. It’s nice to walk out to see the Landy looking like a Landy again. But it’s all got to come off tomorrow.

This was with the bulkhead measuring correct off of outriggers, and likewise the rear tub. If you eye across the top of the bulkhead to tub bulkhead you can see they’re not quite right. It isn’t far away..





Nice to see it looking kinda like after it being in bits for how ever long, all be it temporarily.

Finally finished scratching my head and measuring stuff and started on the bulkhead today. Decided to make the pillar good before removing the footwell.

A few welds left to dress up but I got fed up of running in and out to avoid showers.

Been getting on with the bulkhead.. again, didn’t take an awful lot of pictures whilst at it. Just the passenger footwell and a few bits to tidy up. Need to get the axles out my pals garage and see to them and then it can go back together.

I’ve decided I’m going to treat myself to a galvanised bulkhead in the next year or two. I think this changed my approach in how I repaired the bulkhead. Externally all pretty. But some visible repairs under the bonnet. My mindset was do a sound, strong repair opposed to a pretty one that will fail going over a speed bump!























I’ll dress the welds some more and make it all look presentable. I’ll clean the rest of it up, seam seal it all and give it some paint.

You're making great progress there Joe. Looking really good. That galvanised chassis is making me consider starting a piggy bank.

A bit more bulkhead progress today. Enjoyed doing another little bit of panel fab, I’ll share below for those interested.

Someone had bodged the clutch slave cylinder bracket. Put a later slave cylinder, and cut a hole in the bulkhead/transmission tunnel to accommodate it all.




Little patch cut out and held in with magnets ready to weld. I do find those little magnets really handy for holding while tacking in. You get a good flush finish.




Fabricated this panel up to repair transmission tunnel. Cut to width the main part, bent it up and then I cut and bent the flange piece before welding to the main piece.



Tacked in position. I was going to punch holes in the flange piece and plug weld, but I just decided to weld it up from the front of the bulkhead.



All the welding up done from the front, I haven’t dressed the welds fully. Again, rather leave some strength. It won’t fall apart!



Prettied up on the inside.



*in the last picture you can see I have added the lip to the bottom of the transmission tunnel that takes the floor. I plug welded it from the outside and then to the footwell

I’ll remove the bulkhead tomorrow, wire brush anything that isn’t new, seam seal and get some paint on.

I managed to order a wiring loom yesterday. Along with a brake rebuild kit, new shackles and pins, wheel bearings, oil seals etc etc. So the next week or two should be pretty exciting.

Seam sealed the bulkhead today and gave it a bit of paint. Took me a moment or two to find the technique to seam sealer.



And a spot of paint. It needs another coat, but satisfying to see it a uniform (ish) colour.



That’s all for the day. I’m getting a cold shower!

Cheers!! Sharing stuff on here makes me get on with it a bit quicker. Nice to hear words of encouragement. The chassis is a real investment. I’m going to buy a galvanised bulkhead in the next year or so. But for now, I’m happy!

Stripped the front axle. Ready to rebuild swivels. Just need to finish wire brushing and then I’ll give all a pressure wash before paint. Only one photo from today.



Lots of lovely old grease, hence lack of pics!

New balls Steve. The other side is terrible. Be a waste of a good seal putting those balls back in.

Nice one, I used Britoart ones as reasonable reviews, also replaced half shaft bearings lands, yours look good , and a UJ which was notchy
Getting the railko bush and bottom bearing track out and in were a bugger , I put them in the wrongs ends ooops and had to swap them over
