Vehicle weight limit is paramount. Dont exceed it.

Winch yes. Got one fitted because when im not planning trips away Im in Wales laning and a winch can come in Handy when your on your own.

Wheels, well I had freestyle alloys when i bought it and wanted steels and my 255/85s came up on wolfs so it seemed silly not to buy them. If you allready have standard steels im sure they would be fine. make sure they are genuine original ones though. As im only in a 90, wolfs are prob overkill due to them being designed to take a fully laden 130 (1 ton payload?) This is the reason I wanted you to think more about the 2nd wheel. weight. Cut it where you can, but be sensible. If you run BFG's then I cant see you having any problems.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, It does help in that I plan to take pretty much the same stuff as you, and I am travelling alone, so I won't stress to much about the weight now. Will weigh the landy at the end to make sure it's not overweight.

I would like wolf wheels, but 5 Wolfs add 25 kg's to the weight, which is more than the weight of a spare and tyre..... so many decisions

I have a set of FC rims with235/85r16 BFG MT on eblag at the mo they were the HD rims before wolfs , 6.5 and give you wider track ITAH

who is the best supplier for the bonet mounting kits for a td5?,
also i "heard" that mounting a spare one the td5 was not too practicle because of engine constraints.

Thanks, that would have been a sensible option (I know about one ton rims, but never thought about it as an option), but I got wheels and tyres last week wed

I just got General AT2 235/85/16 x 6 on steel modulars (I know some modulars are crap qualiy, but these are from AJ's tyres and come from a different supplier, sounds like sales talk I know, but all the guys that work there are running them on their personal vehicles, so I figure they must be okay..)

Yea everyone has an opinion. I didn't want to start a debate about wether to take one or two spares, because while I do understand the reasons for only taking one, I have decided to take two. I will also be taking a puncture repair kit, inner tubes, and tyre irons.

The reason I am taking two spares is because I have read plenty stories of people in Africa getting at least 2 punctures per day, and frankly I don't want to be dicking about on the side of the road in Algeria or somewhere with tyre irons where I risk getting kidnapped or robbed or soddomised by a randy camel..

Even if I'm not somewhere dangerous, I'd still rather just change a wheel on the side of the road in midday heat and do punture repair at camp in the evening when it's cooler and more relaxing.

So with all due respect, all I want to know is if anyone actually has a 265 or a 235 on their bonnet, and wether they can see. Cause I'm still swaying between 235 or 265 for my Africa trip. If you have done atually done the Africa trip your views on tyre sizes is appreciated.

Cheers Guys

this is an interesting one. from what i have heard the most readily available tyre sizes out in africa are either 7.50 or more often than not 265/75 so going by the most readily available and the one which will give you a bit more clearance i would go with 265 not 235. saying that at the moment i am swaying between 265 and 285 - purely because the 285 works out vastly cheaper for me. bizarre but i like you plan on 2 spares, i think we share opinions here also. no thanks, rather repair the puncture in the evening not in 50 degree heat in the centre of the sahara, or whilst driving through nigeria

Yo Buddy,

Well it's done already, but I guess I won't know if it was the right decision till we get back :D

Probably the biggest factor in my decision was view over the bonnet, and the reason that was the most important fact is that I found enough credible people that said wide tyres have no discernable advantage in sand. I also guestimated that there would be more 235/85/16's spares avail. Although I'm not expecting to destroy completely 2 spares...

There is no height difference between 265/75/16 and 235/85/16, in fact my General AT2's 235/85/16 seem to be about a centmeter taller than my Kumho 265/75/16.

Wait let me check that with science, 235's are 19.975cm tall, and 265's are 19.875cm tall, so the 235's give you an extra 1/10th of a centimeter :D

This is my 235/85 as far as I recall, I'm at sea right now so can't check!

This is mine with 265/75/16 on. Also with the woodland bracket mount.

Being serious though if you're keeping it on there for any amount of time, particularly in the sun, you must have a cover on the wheel or the rubber degrades very quickly. I cut the middle out of mine to prevent ballooning.
