Was great to meet up with all the NZ members of the LZ Freelander fraternity today.

Well actually HTR was in town so we met up for a coffee at the airport before he flew back down south. Still, the Freelander performed perfectly navigating the meet track around the airport carpark and the coffee was great (thanks Alan).

You are very welcome. I really enjoyed our face to face chat.:)

So 2015 was a bit dry as far as gatherings go, but just had the 2016 LZ Freelander Meet (NZ).

All the usual suspects were there.... erm that'd be @htr and me.

It was a hot wicked let our hair down rave. Plenty of beer, wine, women and partying.

Well it was 30 degrees and we had a great chat over a coffee and Mrs Grumpy did joins us, till she fell asleep with all the Landie chat.

@htr drove the 5 hours up from Cromwell this morning, we went to pick an engine up, had a great chat over lunch and drinks sitting in the shade. In between we had a good sesh of "You let me drive yours and I'll let you drive mine" (Ooh ahh nurse) and look over some great classic MGs. He's left for the 5 hours drive home again now.

Hope you get home safely @htr. Was a good day :)

Glad you had a great NZ annual meet! I'm guessing the Htr's K series is still running as it should?
So which do you prefer, the L series or K series?

Yes, Hts's wheels and engineering is purring sweet :) It made the 500kms journey up here fine and I'm sure should have no probs with the return leg.

lol, driving the K Series felt so familiar, yet so different :)

Its a lot smoother drive, less fuss getting it moving. I was impressed that for quite a reasonably large car, the 1.8 didn't feel at all underpowered. I was suitably impressed. I am though an L Series man and its a bit like asking me which is the best football team, West Ham or Barcelona - Barca don't even come close! (not necessarily saying any Freelander is the Barcelona of the motoring world!)

The 1.8 Freelander isn't that under powered but Htr's has been tweeked so should be better than normal. Do you know what sort of Mpg or the NZ equivalent of Mpg is?
I think that off road the diesel has the edge because of its low down torque. On the road, the 1.8 has the edge due to the engine's eagerness.

He'd filled up before leaving and had done about 500kms and used about 40L of fuel - so that equates to 35mpg - which is what he was hoping for.

Whether it drops a bit during our running around with both of us in the car and a 2nd K Series in the boot, plus his return leg with the extra load, dunno. Plus its up hill going home! He descended 750ft coming here - got to climb it now. Got to get over the Lewis Pass as well which is well over 3,000ft - but he had to do that coming here as well :) Having said that - he drove 500kms into a Northerly wind this morning, it will be pushing him back home this evening.

So we'll have to see what the calcs are when he fills up.

Alan was like a kid in a candy store at the place we went to to pick up the engine :) There were K Series engines everywhere! Full ones, stripped ones, shelves stacked with them. Alan and the fella were getting on like a house on fire. The guy put up with me, until I called his daughter's car a '25' - woops - death stare - its some fancy MG evidently.

Sigh, It was an MG ZR ew er  Yeah FL ran very well. I've just done the calculations on my fuel usage: Up to Chch & with the local running = 34.04mpg and the home journey all open road and steady speed = 35.01mpg pretty good.
Certainly thinking about fitting the VVC inlet manifold to see if that improves things.

Our new friend will be a very useful contact for K series parts! :D

It was especially good to catch up for a cuppa chat, swapping stories... Yes the FLs ride nicely , are quiet, comfortable and not to hard on fuel.

35 Mpg is better than my TD4 although that is an auto.
In fact it's better on fuel than Mrs Nodges new Ford Kuga! So the old FL1 is pretty economical to run.
For comparison, my VVC powered MGF will returns over 45 Mpg if I fanny about in it. However it goes so well, I keep pressing the loud pedal!!

Glad you got back OK, hope no tourists gave you any scary moments!
Damm good fuel consumption figure :)
