200tdi, with 300tdi head??

hi there the answer is no it doesnt fit , why would you want to replace the head with a 300 tdi head ? is yours damaged etc ?????? best get a 200 tdi head its the way to go ..
 
Yes you can fit a 300tdi cylinder head to a 200tdi block. Both the 200 and the 300 tdi use the exact same head gasket (see here LVB500220 HEAD GASKET [3 HOLE] 1.50MM | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. R. Series) and Land Rover did infact supersede the 200tdi cylinder head with the 300tdi cylinder head. A 300tdi cylinder head is a little different however. The rocker assembly is a slightly different setup, as are the injectors. If you are going to be using your exisiting 200tdi injection pump, it will run, but you are best having it calibrated for the 300 tdi injectors (usually just a few minor tweaks) and you will need to get hold of a set of 300tdi injector pipes (the unions are different size threads). I'm not sure whether or not the timing case is different on a 300tdi engine - if it is, you might find that the injection pump sits at a different height / angle and you will need to swap that too, or have some injector pipes custom made to ensure that they fit.

I am new in this landy-world and learning quick, but I see and find that the piston domes/chambers and injection centers are offset differently in the 200-300tdi so I assume a piston change is necessary for good performance. I also read elsewhere that a skimmed/lowered head will cause piston/injector clearance problems.

This information is not from direct experience but seems pretty logical and reasonable. I welcome any correcting comments to my assumptions. My 200 may have a gasket problem but I suspect some wear in valve guides as well so I am researching my options as it seems easier to find a completely rebuilt 300 head than a used 200, and may be even cheaper. Unless the pistons/rings are also getting tired I don;t see this as a good modification. The more I have read the more I like the 200.

You are quite right. The combustion chamber in the piston crown of a 200tdi is more offset than that of the more central combustion chamber found in a 300tdi piston, so if fitting a 300tdi head to a 200tdi block, you will also need to replace the piston heads to suit the 300tdi injectors along with the other specifics listed above. Generally speaking you are supposed to be able to "skim" a cylinder head twice and have workable tolerances with no interference. It does of course depend on how severe the cylinder head damage / wear is and how much metal the machine shop has had to remove from the surface of the head but they should measure 'stand down' and ensure that it is within tolerances before they condemn or approve the head.

If you don't have the necessary equipment to lift the block and weld the engine mounts into a more forward position then a head & ancillary swap makes sense. If you have a hoist and some fabrication / welding skills then sourcing and installing a complete 300tdi would make much more sense.

Why don't you get it done ! If you're convinced it will go. On!!!
Then when it won't go on , be sensible and get the correct head !!! Doh!!!
