200tdi turbo overheating burning smell

Hi all ive got a 1990 200tdi and the turbo seems to be overheating when going up steep hills seems fine on general flat run but up hill it gets really hot results in a plasticy oil burning smell and white smoke actually comming off the turbo itself. Any ideas? Plenty of oil in the girl all pipes connected up. What do yall make of it? Cheers

Turbo shaft moving backwards and forwards? Best to have a pipe off and check endfloat !

Is there plenty of oil in the engine?

It hasn't worked hard lately it could be nothing wrong!

White smoke off the turbo itself say to me very minor oil leak and its burning off?
Coolant level?
Engine temp?
Car std or tweaked?
Viscous fan still fitted?

Has someone in the past played about with the injector pump, causing high egt's under high load?
