Hi I have a defender 110 with an original 200tdi and a 5 speed manual box the engine is shot with a slipped cam bearing. I have an offer of a good 200tdi engine but it is mated to an autobox. will the crank fitting of both engines be the same. Is there anyone in the North Wales area who would be prepared to do the swap for a reasonable exchange in cash? For all sorts of reasons this is a job I would have once do myself but am now unable to. Any advice appreciated. Are there any gotchas I should be aware of I realise I will need to swap the bell housing and turbo around?
Thanks Phil

OMG that's going to cost me one whole pound! Seriously thank you for the advice. What would you recommend I do to the donor once it is out of the RR and on a stand, I would think I would do the rings, oil pump and crank shells given their low cost but what else should be done that's that's cheap and does not require high degree of measurement accuracy. Is there anything that can be done to make the likelihood of a cam bearing slip on the donor engine. Thanks again James

And what are you doing with the old engine?
125k on the donor 118 on mine I had intended keeping it for spares or possibly restoring it if there is no damage to the block . To be honest I will make my mide up once I have run the donor for a while. I want to do a long tour next year and want the best selection of engine and parts.

Personally if it's only on 118k and was running fine I'd just change the oil seals, timing belt and water/fuel pumps and chuck it in. My 300tdi was on a similar mileage and I certainly wouldn't be completely stripping it and putting new piston rings on it

Good advice, I am still worried about the cam bearing shell if it has slipped I have been told this can trash the block and may be the top end as well. The engine was running fine as quiet as a 200tdi can be, I changed the oil and filter plus the air filter which had some oil in. After the service the oil light was coming on at tick over when it was warm, I had never had any concerns about oil pressure until the service. I would put about 500ml in every 2-3k

cant see why a cam bearing slipping will trash the engine ,presumably you will switch off when oil light flashes on, cam bearing isnt hard to replace

I am only going on what I have read on the web that the cam bearing shell is pressed into the block and the damage to the engine is done before the oil light comes on. If the shell has enlarged its hole in the block then there is no way to salvage the block. Got the info from a couple of places http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/tdipage2.htm#a May be I am panicking a bit ( I hope so)

very poor info then , bearings arent line bored but fitted as size on 2.5s ,earlier engines ie series were and a tool was available to do it , the sized bearings can be retrofitted to earlier engines,it is possible to warp a block under extreme over heat ,ive had one were cam goes through 3 bearings then binds ,when cam is fitted from the front and then back, ive had only one like that

I am not buying the auto box just the engine. The RR is an MOT failure due to rust it still drives and was in use up until the mot failure. The guy is away until tomorrow but will pass his details on to you once I have done the deal on the engine.

I'm liking what I am hearing do you know anyone in north wales you can recommend to do the job? It's a lovely 110 with a galv chassis and is fitted out for over landing which is on my bucket list. I had in my youth dreamt of driving to South Africa, mainly because my geography teacher said I couldn't given the political situation on the continent I fear she may be right for now. There must be other safer places to explore. I have driven from the tip of Norway to the Spanish boarder. May be I will look to the east side of Norway Through Russia that would be interesting and the Fishing is good up there so that's a bonus. However it's does leave me with a quandary do I by this engine whist it is available and salvage the parts for spares of mine or get my engine repaired?

acr would be best i know to ask
