200TDI Snorkel Recommendation

Hi,

As the title suggests I'm looking for a snorkel for my 200tdi, however my 90 does not have a hole in the wind where some of the snorkels I have looked at screw into.

It does however have the standard air box (big metal drum).

Just wondered if anyone had a recommendation as to which one to fit.

Is it a factory 200tdi? If so, it should have the intake on the passenger wing. If it doesn't, where is it getting the air from? The snorkel raises where the engine gets the it's air from, so any snorkel you get will need to attach onto where the air comes from. If it's on the other wing, then go for a 300tdi or later snorkel. If it's some weird custom intake, perhaps look at replacing the wing...

It does not have the air inlet in the wind, probably and older wing was put on it at some time. The reast if it is standard, and therefore the intake in the air filter is pointing down which is a bit stupid, I'll fabricate something up.

I took my snorkel off when I had my Landy resprayed. I have noticed I now get more mpg. I'm not sure if I will put one back on. I don't intend on doing any wading, the only other thing to take into consideration is getting cleaner air when in Morocco. Which can be resolved by taking an extra air filter.

Standard air intake usually works best. Why bother, are you really going to need to drive through water more than 2ft deep?
As above, if you are worried about dust, try changing the element more often.

Exactly. It's not so much a snorkel as a raised air intake- the idea being that on dusty roads you draw cleaner air from higher up. The standard intake is high enough for most wading- particularly as the bow wave will drop the water level around where the intake is. It's a Land Rover, not a submarine!

Through wingtop snorkel - that's what I fitted to mine which doesn't have wing vents (wasn't 200tdi originally)

As said through the wing top, personally I think they look better as well

Early models have wingtop vents, which are normally used for the heater intake. The early snorkels used these for the engine air intake.

Safari (genuine) on mine, as soon as I drove it after fitting it I could tell straight away there was a lack of power which is a real toss as theres not enough power to start with!
The lack of power is only small but its there neverthless, i contacted safari and their first question was where did I buy it? like thats going to make any difference.
Then they tried to tell me the ram air effect normally helped with power, well from my old motorbike days when ram air was first being played with, people were saying you had to be doing 140mph to get the max effect of the ram air, so not really an issue with a defender especially a 200tdi

Another downer is its utter ****e for laning as the top gets ripped off.

Wind resistance against speed is a logarithmic curve, so it makes little difference under about 120 mph.

2ft deep water, yup have done a few times in the Disco carpets got a bit damp. But it for two reasons dust in the desert and also somewhere to run wires up to the roof attachments.

Basically, wind resistance increases more rapidly with increasing speed!

So as you say, ram air effect at landy speed is a non event!

I can remember someone telling me some time ago that once you got to 150mph ish each extra 10mph onwards required twice the horsepower due to wind resistance?

Could always jam a traffic cone in the snork that'd give a ram effect. (I'll bet people would get out your way pretty quick anorl.

Yes, I dont have exact figures, but that would be about right. Like the aerodynamics on a formula one car, they only become really effective at those kind of speeds.

And also why those record breaking cars that do about 700mph are shaped more or less like a needle.
