200TDI Fan belt tension - flapping around - too loose?

Hi All,

I have a 200TDI in my Defender and unfortunately the battery is not getting very much charge at all. I know it's not the battery because that's less than a year old.

However I suspect I could have a loose fan belt which in turn is not giving out much charge to the battery, I've had the multimeter on it and it's showing 13.4V to the battery when running the engine and when I rev it up, it goes up to 13.6V which I know is nowhere near the 15V'ish it should be at!

I had a quick look in the engine bay with the engine running the fan belt is flapping around on the left hand side (the part at which is goes vertical). It's not flapping loads, but it's definitely not running straight nice and tightly. My question is, Is this too loose and should it not be flapping around and would this cause the battery to barely charge?

Hello,

If it is slipping slightly you wont be getting full charge. I'd suggest that you adjust the tension in the belt so that you can press it no further than 10mm at the longest stretch between pulleys and then take a reading with your multi-metre.
