I had an older post when I first got my 90 about which engine was in it.http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/engine-259616-2.html
Now I know it is a Defender 200Tdi.

Here is the result of Vin Check Manufacturer code: Land RoverLDModel: Defender (for early models: Ninety, or One Ten)VWheel base: 92.9 inch, but designated 90ABody type: 2-door: Pickup, hood cab, truck cab, or soft/hard topBEngine type: 2.5 litre diesel turbo (model 19J)7Steering and transmission: Right-hand drive (RHD), 5-speed manual (LT85, LT77, LT77S, R380 or other)FModel year: 1989AAssembly location: Solihull, UK

But qeustion is. Is there a way that I can check if it was replaced ?? as Some people that have seen it say that it looks like the origional engine.
Would it have different engine mounts ect from the 2.5 litre diesel turbo (model 19J ??? Or should I be checking numbers??
Photos of engine.

Look at5 the radiator mounts.

look at the rocker cover

the high turbo

the cyclone breather

the air box

The fan cowl - 19j ones dont say turbocharged intercooled on them - as the 19j doesnt have an intercooler as stock.

the engine code on the front left under the injectors

looks like an 11L defender engine like mine in those photos . and it looks to have all the defender bits on it . your vin check says it should have a 19j in it which is a totally different engine how ever if you had all the parts its an easy swap to look factory - there was a 200tdi upgrade kit from dealers in the early 1990s as well to confuse matters more.

like nobber says look at the mounts on the radiator - do they look like they were cut down by 28mm and rewelded - as even if you change the slam panel and the slam panel brackets you still up to cut and shut the lower mounts.

"exhaust mounts differ td uses a bolts and rubber doughnuts tdi use the later push over rubber mounts"

agree'd how ever if they went to a 200tdi exhaust (and given how much of the rest they changed - thats likely) then they would have had to go to 200tdi mounts.

does your exhaust back box run left to right behind the cross member or is it longitudinal to the tail pipe. ?

Chassis number should be just behind front lashing eye on the O/S.
Defender 200tdi engine swap won't leave that many tell-tale signs ( unlike a Disco engine ). There are plenty of bodywork and interior changes that were made with the introduction of the 200tdi (I.e. the Defender ). But, these may have been changed too!

What changes? My 91 Defender is no different to my old Ninety.

Depending on exact year and model :- badges and decals ( obviously now called the Defender, Land Rover badge changed too ); external ribs on roof; rear roof vents; door-operated courtesy light; intermittent wiper function; seats moved in 1"; upholstery; push-button door handles; side repeaters. Gearbox and t-box ratios changed too, although there were exceptions.
This isn't a definitive list, some options were available before the Defender. With a lot of Landies being modified over the years not all the clues remain!

There was further cheapening of the bodywork too, painted cappings and various fittings made of thinner grade steel, even less rivets used in places, bolted-through anti-luce fasteners on the pickups instead of welded assemblies, little cost-cutting details everywhere really.. farmers report that the new Defenders can actually get blown away by strong winds.. :)

Chassiss Number and Engine Numbers both match the log book im pleased to say, thought I had a wrong un hear.
Cant see any difference in rad mounts ect. will keep looking for teltale signs.

100% sure you've a Defender 200 transplant in there! It fits in with no mods ( apart from the rad/intercooler ) and if it's been in there a while will look original!

Its looking that way. engine is IIL was a bit worried Id been driving about in a ringer the last few months. although looking at chassis numbers it does not seem hard to do, no wonder so many are getting stolen.

Thanks Everyone for help:)
