From what you've described it sounds like your mechanic might have kept the Defender inlet for himself ;) The only way that you could end up with the air intake inlet pointing towards your bulkhead with a turbo up top is if your mechanic has installed an air inlet from a 12J (2.5 N/A) engine upside down, the air inlet from a 19J (2.5 TD) engine upside down, the discovery variant of the 200tdi inlet manifold upside down or the 300tdi intake manifold turned upside down. If you can get a picture up, it would be great.

Generally speaking though, mixing and matching parts is fine, as long as it is done properly. Take a look at this topic. A bloke used a 19J turbo on his discovery 200tdi to effectively turn it into a Defender 200tdi:

The set up you describe is pretty standard for LHD landy's who want to upgrade to a 200Tdi from a disco as the original Disco turbo will foul part of the steering box.

Fitting a 19J turbo, mainfold etc to a 200Tdi is possible and has been done several times, you just need to look harder, i've covered it a few times on here on my threads as i was looking into doing it myself.

if your engine runs fine with no issues of adverse behaviour then don't worry about it. If you're worried though, speak to the guy you got the engine from as we can only guess without pictures etc.

it must be 19j upside down as was 19j engine he converted from and he has used as much of this as poss by the looks, im not worried as it goes fine, but intercooler hose to the inlet is long way from intercooler,, this be ok?
