hi all i managed to pick up a 200tdi defender just over a month ago :), been doing little bits n bobs on it to get it mint, now i have no clutch,
if i push the clutch down there is nothing untill about 1cm from the floor but there is still drive getting to the wheels whatever i do,
im thinking its either the master cylinder or slave cylinder? is this correct
if so is this an easy job to do? and how much will it cost because in skint :(
1 other thing wot fluid should it take?
cheers jake

I'd try bleeding the clutch slave cylinder first. After fitting my 200TDi (and new clutch arm etc) I'd lost fluid and had no clutch at all. I tried bleeding it with an Easybleed unit (no mates about to help at the time!) which was a mare cos of pressure leaks but found it was possible to gravity bleed it. Just loosen the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder (located at the bottom of the bellhousing on the passenger side), keep the filler topped up, and wait until you have a steady stream of fluid from the bleed nipple with no air; then close the bleed nipple.

Hope this helps

Richard

Yep sounds like slave cylinder to me. Easy to change, just make sure that the push rod stays connected to the gearbox. Also clamp the flexible hose before changing, this will help with bleeding it thru. I have found that pressure bleeding is often the only way to get all the air out.

In my 90 I kept the original transfer box as most people do so I don't think the Disco slave cyclinder will fit. On my donor Disco it's certainly mounted in a different place (opposite side) and looks different anyway. Of course if you have a Disco transfer box in your Defender and a Disco too then you should be sorted if it isn't just a bleeding issue in the end. :)
