I have a 200tdi Defender and I’ve been struggling with locating the external source of the engine air intake as I have the heater intake on top of the left wing but no side vents, either side. I now suspect the left hand wing has been replaced by a previous owner with a 300tdi wing or similar, hence no external air intake that side.

I got this far as I was looking to fit a raised air intake, which leads me to my question, would you expert folk recommend a wing swap and air intake fit, or would it be appropriate to cut a suitable hole in the wing, accepting I cannot taper the edges and everything will need to fit snugly? Alternatively, would it be easier to fit a top entry raised air intake such as the southdown4x4 type?

Cheers

Personally I would fit a Southdown snorkel, much better as it avoids all the plastic ducting that's used behind a wing intake.

A top of wing raised intake probably best and fit new air cleaner filter as likely to have picked up crud floating about the engine bay.

The missing plastic ducting you need to connect to the side vent is no longer available to buy so you’ll need to find some secondhand parts which can be difficult and expensive.

Most likely you will have to look for a part in the disassembly of the car, go to online auctions, the problem is interesting. Try to do it according to the idea with a 4x4 air intake can work out. So I found several air intakes that can fit your car, you can see here - https://boostyourengine.com/best-6-7-powerstroke-intercooler-pipe-upgrade/,6.7 powerstroke cold side intercooler pipe and adjust in size, I have been using this service for a long time to replace consumables and other parts.

I have the safari one on mine, and my thoughts are as follows,
1, it looks cool
2, it restricts air flow as power is noticeably reduced, it is not relaly the snorkels fault rather the pipe from wing vent to air filter is to small for such a long run.
3, it looks cool!
4, it sticks out to much so is easy to damage
5, the top piece is equally as easy to damage
6, did I mention it looks cool?

Based on that I would advise you go top mount as others have said.

I am planning to do something similar - fit a side entry snorkel to a transplanted Discovery 200tdi in my 1986 110.

It was originally fitted with the 2.5 N/A engine and doesn't have the air intake on the wing, so I need to add this. I plan to cut a hole in the existing wing.

Would anyone be kind enough to measure and tell me the position of the cut out? I've got the plastic connectors that sit behind the wing, just need to make sure I cut the hole in the right place....
