Hi Guys

Trying to help my father in law who is having trouble with key fob and locking/unlocking on his range rover sport 2009.

For some reason, the key fob won't communicate with the car. Its seemingly worse when locking, it just won't lock with the key fob. Not even a flash of the indicators... absolutely nothing.

Go to it the following day and it could be absolutely fine. It will lock and unlock several times without issue.

Not sure if its related, but the drivers rear door doesn't seem to lock even when the fob actually works.

Seems there's some gremlins. And after searching hasn't given me any pointers.

Starting battery is only reading 11.98volts after an hours drive yesterday. But starting absolutely fine which surprises me for a tdv8 Alternator working fine.

Any ideas please guys? Any tips? Thanks alot

Battery or alternator a goose at that voltage, battery min 12.4v after a charge and left for half hour , alt should put out about 14.7 to 15v at 2000rpm with lights heater and what not turned one
the low volts will cause all sorts off funny faults.

Range Rovers don't like low voltage. Check key fob batteries as well

Hi

plus 1 what’s been mentioned ref battery when engine is off should read around 12.6vdc

Key fobs are charged via inductive from when u put the key into the ign

if there ok down by the passenger sill, under the carpet ur find 3 x green wires , they need to be taken apart , cleaned , then soldered along with some heat shrink over them

found a pic for u, the loom sits in the channel by the passenger seat , also see if there’s water in that channel

if after you’ve done that and still doesn’t work ur key fob may req replacing , in the mean time if u have a rechargeable tooth brush put ur keys on the charge base for a few hours and see if the fob works then

u can buy new key fobs for around £30 , will need to get the blank cut unless u swap ur key over and will need programming , should have a min of 2 x keys

Finally may i ask how often do u use ur rangy please, ie how long the fobs have been charged for whilst sitting in the ign and how many keys do u have plse, thks

hope that helps

@gstuart Gary you are a legend mate. :) You go to so much trouble to help others and ask for nothing except a few P's & Q's in return.
A proper Gent is what you are mate! 24carat Gold. :D

shucks , thank u as that’s so kind of u to say , always considered the forum to be an extended family and always like to help a little where I can

Must admit learnt a few things since owning my disco , ie how to replace the airbags and rebuild the suspension, lol

Thankyou everyone for your replies. Much appreciated!

The alternator seems to be working well, and sits at 14.4/14.6 volts after about 30 seconds running.

The range rover was used on a 40 minute journey and then wouldn't lock for love nor money! Then the following day it locked without issue. Which lead me to believe its not the starting battery as it should be fully charged after 40 mins.

But my father in law the owner of the vehicle used it infrequently to be honest. Only covering 1k miles in the last year. Although he did take it on a 1 hour journey every so often.

I will look into the wiring loom as you suggest thankyou!

ur so welcome , always a team effort

must admit when I bought my discovery 3 , virtually the same ref wiring etc the key fob batteries had it m they are soldered in so just got 2 x new keys and programmed them myself

that’s ok ref the voltage , can check it with everything turned on and at 2,000 revs but think it’s either the batteries in the fobs knackered or those wires

please let us know how u get on and plenty of us here to help if u get stuck

Thankyou! I will give that a go too!

You mentioned charging the fob batteries via a Toothbrush charger, how do I make that work mate?

indeed as mentioned just lay the keys on the base one at a time for a few hours , if nothing changes check those wires out
