Hi All,

I haven’t posted for quite a while on this forum, my previous vehicles have mostly been Series 3’s with a defender and a Discovey 3 at some stage.

My daily driver is a 1960 Series 109 which when I workout how to upload a photo I will show you.

Forward to now and I have recently bought a 2008 defender 90 2.4Tdci. Having got it home it’s now doesn’t like starting. I have had the fault codes read and it appears to be the VCV valve and the pressure relief valve both of which I’m happy to change if that fixes the issue. My symptoms are the engine turns over a lot and freely I get white smoke out the exhaust when it’s turning over so some fuel is being injected. The engine will usually eventually jump into life and runs well, plenty of power no running issues no smoke but turn it off again and the same issue, no starting etc. In my investigations I have found that there does seem to be some water in the fuel tank as after it’s been run there is water in the filter not a huge amount but a noticeable volume.

The previous owner has had the pump reconditioned and the injectors changed, my suspicion is this was done in haste, not noticing water in the fuel which has now caused the VCV Valve to fail. I have found some information online about water and this valve failing, has anyone had any similar symptoms? My plan is for this weekend to drop the tank and completely drain the system and refuel with fresh fuel and probably injector cleaner. Obviously I need a diagnostic tool for this vehicle, no more old fashioned diagnostics. I am looking at the Hawkeye total tool which seems good. Does anyone know if this will carry out a fuel pump learn as I can’t see anything online saying that it can or can’t do it. I spoke to Bearmach and even they don’t know which is brilliant. Any help there would be massively appreciated so I can buy the right tool for the job.

From my searches into this I fear there may not be a definitive answer to the problem. It will be a learning curve for me as I’ve not had much to do with engine management systems in the past other than Td5 and that was fairly limited.

Any help with my issues would be massively appreciated and I’ll keep this post up to date with any progress so it can be found in the future if anyone else struggles with this problem, presuming I can fix it.

Cheers

Jack

Well, if Bearmach don't know :rolleyes:, then I'd be asking Black Box solutions the same question about their Nanocom, and see where that takes you ....
