2007 - Defender 90

Hello All

Am looking for some advice and thoughts from people on my planned purchase of a Defender 90 - 2007. Have been using a Fourtrak for the last 3 years which has been excellent for the job of towing heavy plant trailor however as there are no new foutraks am considering the new Defender 90.

Does anyone have any thoughts / insight into the 2007 model with the new engine etc and its suitability to do the job ?

Any input welcome and considered.

Peter, Eoin here we too moved from fourtrak to lr as of the reason same as yourself, and i have to say it was a hard change but we were happy enough but had a few teething problems at start but keep researching and youll be happy enough too purchase a landy.

Pesonally I wouldn't bother with the 2007, get a Td5.

The transit engine in the 2007 is a good torquey engine but the gearbox is ****, poor selection, prone to failing and not man enough for tough off roading (they go wrong on road!!!), I'm not keen on the interior either, looks better but no room. If you're 6' tall, forget it!

All up to you at the end of the day, road test both the 2007 and a late td5 and make up your own mind.

thats a load of **** mate. im 6ft tall and ive sat in a 300tdi a td5 and the new 07 ones and the latest is the comfiest and the roomiest

Thaks for your input, test drives have been good and the dealers want to sell which makes it even better. Should have my new landy for April so will let you knw what I think of it.

TD5's here at work have proven themselves as good towing vehicles. we tow rotary drill rigs on trailers around the country everyday. not many problems. only major one was a transfer box after covering i think, about 120k.

Probably not as they are salesmen, but meant that they were willing to negotiate quite a bit to make their sale (-:

there is a thread on lr4x4 about the failings of the 07 gearbox. doesn't look promising

Ive done about 7,000 miles the Allisport defender testing and developing the tuning and althow i like the car it drives nice etc etc ( But so does any new landrover)
Ive also done some work on the Ashcroft Transmision AUTO 07 defender that is also a good car.
But i still prefer the proven TD5 defender over the new ford powered machine.
Just my opinions, no offence to anyone with one already.

Landrover have also had problems on the 07 ford with the turbos and diffs and cylnder heads failing amongst a lot of other niggly things.

And soon there may be a 5 cylnder ford version out HUsh HUsh tho lol

I've had one of the new Defenders since last June and it has now done 11k. Despite a considerable amount of off-road and motorway work have'nt had any problems apart from a temperamental immobiliser.
Engine uses a little more oil in comparison to my old 2003 TD5 but about 250ml is'nt out of order. The oil filtration does'nt seem to be as good as the old landy and is definately pitch black now.

bloody hell . is that just for engine or the whole transmission ? id service it atleast once a year.

if not make sure its the best oil

Seems I'm at the mercy of the dealer, if 12000 miles is what they say then who am I to argue. At 8 months old she will have done a good few more miles by the time the warranty expires in June 2010!
Incidentally, my 2003 TD5 also had 12000 mile service intervals as recommended by Taunton Land Rover. Kept that one for four years and was confident in selling it to a mate.
I believe the only exception to this 12k service mileage is very hard use by such as Electricity or Water Boards when they get use and abuse all day every day. The service interval then reduces to 6k.

Don't know if the clutch on em is the same as that on the transits but the transit ones don't like towing. they tend to burn out very quickly.
