i bought a fixer, the engine doesnt turn, but i read something about there being a pump in the transmission and when that doesnt work the enige wont crank. and when i turn the key, it doesnt start, all i hear is a clicking noise, it has enough power in the batteries. any suggestions?

Guessing it’s an auto then? Can’t say I’m familiar with lr3/ disco 3s but try putting main gearbox in neural and a bar on crank pulley and see if engine turns if not could be spun bearings or snapped crack, seems common on disco 3s especially autos.

Cambelt cover off and see how the belt is doing, the pump you are thinking of is most likely the engine oil pump, oil pump is at front of engine, cambelt tensioner bolts to oil pump casing, casing fails and cambelt drops off scrapping the engine.

A clicking noise suggests the starter is being energised, so this discounts the transmission interlock.

My guess is its suffered from a failed crankshaft, which is pretty common, and normally results in an engine that won't turn over. A failed oil pump casing is also common, but usually the engine will still crank over, as it normally just bends valves, or breaks rockers, when the timing goes out.

Unless you're an experienced mechanic, or experienced in D3 repairs, it's probably not a good project to cut your D3 teeth on, let alone the work involved sorting a replacement engine will often exceed the value of the repaired vehicle.
