L322 2004 V8 abs ecu unrepairable

I have been told by a reputable company that my abs ecu is unrepairable, so I’m about to throw the towel in after a recent £2,600 spent on recon gearbox and new alternator.
2 questions:
1. Does anyone know what, if anything, can ‘cook’ the ecu - apparently it’s can bus related.
2. Is it best to sell as ‘spares or repairs’, or break it myself (gearbox only done 700 miles since recon), or sell to a salvage company?

I really do not have any more money to throw at it :(

Due to its location above the exhaust manifold, it overheats and inside are some very very tiny hair like wire connections, these de-solder and cause ABS faults a good'un.

Look up my threads on this issue that I had, ECU replacement as the only option for me.

(it is massively more common fault on the BMW E39 and E38 as it sits even lower in the engine bay and as such is closer to the heat source - but is very common, Gooooooooooogle will bring up loads of resuts)

Hi Saint.V8, I read your posts originally and as a result decided to send the whole lot off to ecutesting.com They repaired it and sent it back where I refitted it and it ran fine for a week or so. The faults then all of a sudden reappeared with a vengeance along with and extra engine failsafe and can bus errors galore. Ecutesting.com offered a lifetime warranty so took it back for testing and today told me the parts required were unavailable and that it was to do with the canbus. A big concern of mine is that if its not the abs ecu causing the failure, and I buy another ecu, is it going to fail again? Wasting even more money! I’ve done only 700 miles on the recon gearbox, and new alternator, and have no more funds to spend on it.

Bide your time, save your pennies and keep digging for answers. Saint and others on the net have been through this and there'll be an answer. ;)
 
So, of what value is their "Lifetime Warranty" ? I am a bit puzzled.
They took a failed ecu in and repaired it and gave it a "Lifetime" warranty, it fails shortly afterwards and now it's "goodnight Vienna"?

They have actually been very fair and because they’re unable to get parts to repair are even refunding the original cost of 1st repair.

Yes the ‘knee jerk reaction’ is to give up, but I like your reasoning and maybe I will bide my time as you suggest, (and just turn a deaf ear to swmbo complaining). :)

Does Rick at callrova repair ECU's maybe worth a look at their website or give them a call... just a thought...

Lifetime warranty is not worth the paper it's written on. It is a con trick used to sell or promote services. Basically it means whilst it works it's warranted as soon as it fails it's life is over.

But at least they returned the original cost of repair without me asking, inc postage. So it hasn’t cost me a penny for the abs ecu.

As Datatek says, you'll need full fat diagnostics to ensure it is setup for the right model and year of car. When i changed mine, I took it to a very helpful local indy who set it up for me on their T4 system.

It’s arrived, (ecu, modulator, pump), should I fit all 3 or just the ecu? And can I do it and then take to garage. It’s off a 2002 4.4V8.

Part of programming the modules is for wheel sizes and optional features the car may have that affect the abs braking performance when needed.
