Hi all,
I can see that I'm not the first with this problem.
But none of the other threads have helped so far.
My freelander starts perfect every time until the temperature drops.
I have done the following.
glowplugs
Relays
Head temp sensor
Fuel pump in (w, arch)
Fuel filter
Leak back tested
Injectors removed and cleaned
Egr blank off
Tdi tuning box (fitted)
New battery
Crank case filter
Serviced
Is there any further process of elimination that any one could help
Me with please.its driving me crackers.

are they new glow plugs and how long does it take for the glow plug light to go out also try switch the ignition of and back on as soon as the glow plug light goes out I used to do it three times before I changed the glow plugs

I put bosh glow plugs in. I have tried 3-4 times to warm the glow plugs
On many occasions!this did not make any difference. The light goes out after about 3 seconds..and sorry I have changed the head temp sensor.
And had 2 different diagnostic machines test the car no fault codes were found.

I'm not familier with the FL, but the M51 diesel in the P38 has 2 temperature sensors, one for the gauge and one for the diesel ECU. A faulty sensor may not pull a fault code but may still cause starting problems. Three seconds doesn't seem long for the glowplugs in current temperatures, the glow time is also a function of engine temperature.

I will have to have a look at that then thanks .I changed the one right at the top right.

Really need looking at using live data on diagnostics.
Don't know the Freelander, just been dipping in to see what sort of horror stories there are as my wife is angling after one:eek:

Hi I tried this this morning and it didn't seem to make a difference unfortunately.
Do you have any other knowledge please.
 
Put a volt meter from the end of a glowplug to the block, you should see about 11 volts while the glowplug light is on.

Cheers very much I will give it a try, there was a frost this morning and the bloody thing didn't start the AA started it straight away with a little easy start.He seems to think its low pressure fuel. We noticed that it has a slight diesel leak from somewere low down on the engine but it is definatly only when it really struggles to start when cold. Puzzled again!!!!!!!!!
 
So you have diesel on the undertray?.
This normally comes from the high pressure pump...located on the engine block behind the oil filter by the left hand engine mount.
In cold weather you will find on first sart up in the morning doozle will leak from the piston caps for about 30 seconds until it gets some heat in it and will then seal itself .....common fault. there have been a few write ups on it....do it your self with a timing chain lock down kit and new seals...approx £50 inc lock down kit or get a recon pump fitted at a garage....approx £600.
