2002 L322 V8 - Adding a tow bar advice?

looking to add a tow bar to my 2002 petrol V8 vogue L322

Anyone got any kits? / i could use some instructions of where to plug it all in if anyone has any?

Just looking to pull small catering trailers.

i would recommed you buy a genuine LR kit.

if you dont get the genuine LR wiring kit at least you will have all sorts of problems when splicing into cables etc..

the genuine wiring has an ECU that simply plugs in to the rear of the car in the cubby hole, no modifications required. and the ECU also inhibits the air suspension as it should to avoid grounding out the jockey wheel !!

that would be the simplest option / plug and play.

FWIW my mum had an L322 and looked in to having a tow bar fitted about 2 years ago. Apparently it is not at all straight forward, the mounting is a bit of a faff then there is the electrics of the thing.

I can't remember the cost but it was a lot for a tow bar all be it that was an independent landie specialist but I don't think they were making it up when they showed me what was involved. The correct mounting to the vehicle is critical and requires some modification or something at the back IIRC because there is no chassis as such so tow hitch has to be bolted to the sub frame or something like that. So I would say maybe speak to a dealer about it first before you end up having bought a tow hitch you then can't fit or you cause an electrical problem - I'm not sure but I think it has something to do with the CAN bus system on L322, it needs the correct computer settings to work and there is something not "normal" about wiring it all in.

Sorry if that sounds negative but a tow hitch on one of these is not as simple as bolting on a bit of metal and then connecting some bits of wire. Hope that saves some trouble.
 
I'd get a NAS tow bar.

The farmers round here found the standard LR tow bars not up to scratch, they all use gen Landy harnesses but aftermarket bars that were much more robust. Doesn't look pretty on a L322 or D3/4, but it gets the job done. The standard fit is for light duty work.
 
Genuine land rover do two types for the L322.

the swan neck type and a heavy duty type that slides into a massive cross member bolted to the underside of the rear end. its then held in with a large split pin.

i have the heavy duty one fitted to mine, and believe me its heavy !! the removable tow bar must weigh over 12KG !!

and i have used it to pull 2.5 tonne of horse and trailer and it was brilliant

That is the NAS tow bar which is what I'd get.

On the most part, what they use up here looks as though it has been lifted from a Defender.

so we're looking at the £4-500 mark for this, that's not a huge deal, with that in mind before i would've bought one with a tow already installed but hey ho,

i'm going to be pulling very light trailers, certainly no horses :p !

are there pre cut holes, i guess what i mean is, if i buy the parts, the landrover official ones, can i install them myself without huge issues? i:e does the chassis accomodate it or is there drilling etc needed?

sorry for the dumb questions & thanks.

it is all DIY'able.

like i said, all plug and play with the genuine equipment.

all holes and mounts are already in place.

only to be expected from landrover quality :p
 
Hands, tow bar installation not difficult - coupla hours at most DIY. a garage will charge c. £50.

I have removable tow bar for sale - all the parts are genuine LR parts. Never got around to putting it on and my new RR has one fitted already.

For a start you have to drop the rear bumper.
