Hi everyone,
Ive recently bought a 2002 freelander td4 with jacto gearbox with 103k miles on the clock.

1st i would like to apoligize for the long post but i wanted to put as much info in as i could so you know exactly what is happening to my gearbox

When i shift the gear stick from neutral to drive im getting a big thump/kick from the gearbox and engine tilts back slightly
Also when the automatic gearbox move up from 2nd to 3rd gear i am getting a kick again, this is the same when im slowing down and from 3rd to 2nd gear i get it again.
I have read up alot online so what ive done is looked at the inhibitor switch which i cant seem to get the alignment tool on ebay and charles hursts landrover were clueless to what i wanted, they said they just replace gearbox which costs £900 all in.
Ive reset the gear selector underneath the jeep with no difference.
I did see a thread were someone said changing the gearbox oil can help alot of gearbox issues so im trying that at the minute going through the rave steps to oil change. And unable to get texaco n402 oil so comma dexronll lll ATF is what i got. heres the confusing part for me,

Drained about 2litres out of box then realised i wasnt on level ground so started car and realised moving from neutral to drive there was no kick from the box but in drive the jeep felt like clutch was slipping and hardly driving. Still there was no kick from N to Drive each time.
Levelled jeep to refill box and RAVE states fill oil until it starts pouring out of the level hole on bottom of box, well as soon as i started pouring it in it started pouring straight out at the bottom!!! So basically if i put the nut back on according to RAVE manual the box has the right amount of gearbox oil in it, well i took it a drive known what to expect and low and behold it was still slipping and no power and i assume its because theres no pressure in the box from very low fluid level. so i levelled it again and poured 2 litres back in and took it a drive which im back to square one with moving gear stick from N to DRIVE and kick plus engine tilt also 2nd to 3rd kick and 3rd to 2nd slowing down kick again from gear ratio timing being wrong

Anyone any ideas or had same problem??

hi,

did u do it at the correct temperature and did u have the engine running or not when u checked the oil level

if the fluid is very low or ur not sure it may be a good idea not to use it until your 100 percent sure its done correctly or get an approved garage to do it otherwise u could cause severe damage to the gearbox

have u checked the engine mountings etc for any wear and tear , but best to get the gearbox ATF spot on first and then go from there

may i ask what made u adjust the gear selector , did u have any fault codes showing up on the dashboard , did u use the correct alignment tool

was the fault there when u bought it, can u take it back to the garage etc

hope that helps abit and if u havent done it always nice to pop over into the introduce section and tell the forum abit about yourself

thanks for the reply gstuart after doing abit more researching online ive came across something that might be the cause.

the line pressure duty solenoid valve failure which when it fails can cause gear shift to have no torque reduction therefore gear changing will be very harsh. i just wonder if there is anyone around belfast that has the testbook for the td4 that could run a diognostics test on the freelander to see what comes up if anything

Dont go driving it about as it is as you will do expensive damage . Comma dexron 111 atf is no good for this box , see if you can get carlube atf-u , this is a lot cheaper than the n402 texaco , and is the correct spec.
The oil level is critical on these boxes , it has to be right or again the box will be damaged ! There is a lot about how to check the solenoids with an ohm meter in the Freelander section . You dont need a diagnostic unit . You need to be fairly experienced to have a reasonable chance of success , otherwise just get a jatco specialist to do the job . It should not be that expensive a job , say £200 or so . HTSH
