I am having trouble with a 2002 Discovery Td5 after fitting new injector harness.

after purging it run's but lumpy,A quick rev over 2000rpm it clears but around 1 minute letter you start to hear a loud tapping noise (as in an injector bouncing) and the engine starts to shake and around 30 seconds later it stails and wont start for about 5-6 mnutes and repeats itself over and over again.

We purchased the td5 out a motor auction and i have spoken to the last owner who tells me it has had a reckon head, new fuel pump, new pressure regulator, and apparently one new injector! All work was carried out by a supposedly land rover specialist in nottingham who tbh i wouldn't give a bloody push bike to.

We have fitted a new injector harness but it's still the same. Oil was heavily present at the ecu so we have removed it and cleaned it of electrical cleaner and brake fluid and tried it again but still no joy! Any ideas??

That was going to be my next point of call tbh but rain stopped play!!Worth changing the whole filter housing?

its only £16 for airbleed valve or to save your money undo valve and remove bleed valve elliment disco should run
to bleed turn key to position 2 then pump throttle pedal 5 times to the floor and up again this kicks in autobleed lasts 3 mins

Ok cheers for that:) Will report back once i have had chance to look at it tomorrow;) thanks for your help;)

based on the title of your topic i'm a bit confused... so the described symptom was there before you replaced the harness or it appeared just after you had new harness fitted? ... cos if it was there before exactly the same just that the harness didn't cure it there can be a totally unrelated problem cos it seems more like injector washers/seals or fuel pump failure..unless the air bleed valve doesnt fix things, which i have some doubts as it is involved only in hard starting from cold not in missfire while driving

It misfires while driving and losses power and cuts out and won't restart for some time.

Check ecu and was badly contaminated with oil hence why I went straight for the injector harness as am following up on somebody elses work!! Have not test driven it yet put when it did start it was doing what it had before whilst on tick over!

As stated fuel pump is new! As is head, fuel filter, pressure regulator, injector harness and supposedly one injector but I don't think that part is TRUE!! All injectors look identical in colour/age etc!!

I understand that you were told it was new, but can you hear it working?

I say this because the symptoms you describe are classic for a fuel supply problem.

Fuel pump is working as it makes the same noise as my other 2 td5's! I am going to remove the panel in the boot and just make sure as i have no faith or trust in the garage that carried the work out on the vehicle for the last owner:rolleyes:

From the experience i have it does appear to me to be a fuel issue:mad: Following up somebody else's work is always a pain in the backside.

I will start with the bleed valve and work from there forwards:)

Right i have had chance to remove the bleed valve from the fuel filter housing and whilst i was at it i removed every pipe tail and checked for blockage and cleaned. Removed and cleaned non return valve and replaced all tails with out putting the bleed valve back in and the vehicle wouldn't start at all after carrying out the purging starting procedure ten time's!

I refitted the bleed valve and it started after 3 purge procedures so i am at a loss now! Could this problem be simply down to the filter housing having a hairline crack?

If the vehicle is left ticking over it is very lumpy and will only tick over for around 5-6 minutes and then stalls and will not re-start for some 10 minutes, but if the vehicle is kept with it's rev's up it stalls after around 10-12 minutes and will not start again untill 10 minutes later!

the fact that the pump sounds like a good one doesnt mean it works cos the sound comes from the low pressure stage while the high pressure part of it could be fubar'd... the certain way to find that out is to insert a gauge instead of the FPR and if you dont have 4bar there or the pump's high pressure section is gone or the fuel line from the pump to head is clogged...if there is 4 bar and still missfires go for the injector washer's/seals...or before that hook to a tester and make sure it's not a crank signal failure

Ok thanks i will try this next!
