Hello folks,

I'm looking for some help with my 2002 disco td5 facelift model, i have the handbrake/low brake fluid warning light on along with the abs light, TC, and hill descent light, i have heard of the 3 amigo's but not 4!

the TC and ABS is not working, the fluid level of the brake fluid is fine, the tyre pressures are all correct,

whith the ignition off the abs module is making a very very faint noise (ticking)

I unplugged the 2 multi-plugs on the module and repluggend them in to see if it would reset the lights but no joy so far, i have also tried giving the module a tap to see if it was a stuck shuttle but also no joy.

Can anyone help?

I know this maybe an ABS sensor but can't get to a diagnostics machine at the moment and the roads are extremely icy here at the moment and trying to stop a 2 ton landrover with no ABS is not fun!

any help appreciated.

Gixer1.

you need to get it pluged in thats the only real way to find out even if you fix the problem the light could stay on fill in your profile so we no where you are there may be someone local who can plug you in

I don't mean to be rude, but if you think that ABS will help you stop on packed ice, you don't know how it works.

We've had a decent spell of cold weather here with packed ice and all that happens when you try to brake is, the ABS system goes into overdrive on all 4 wheels (because they are ALL trying to lock up at the same time) and so you get no retardation at all.

The issue with ABS is that the system compares wheel speeds, one with another, so if one wheel is starting to lock up the ABS operates the pulsed braking to that one wheel.

However on ice there is almost no friction between all the tyres (simultaneously) and the road surface, so they all start to lock up and the ABS pulse-brakes all wheels so the upshot of that is little or no slowing down.

The only thing to do on packed ice (with std tyres) is to drive in a manner where you don't need to use your brakes.

Safe driving,

Dave

Check the handbrake and brake fluid level switches first.

If you eliminate those from the ABS side then that would save some time.

The handbrake switch is down at the base of the handbrake lever, so central console needs to come out.

Fluid switch is on the brake reservoir (I know you probably knew that already, but just in case...)

If you disconnect those two switches and you STILL have the handbrake/fluid warning light lit, then you have more troubles.

The ABS fault can be one of three things:

ABS Sensor failure
ABS Modulator control block Failure
ABS Modulator control failure (Shuttle valve switches or the connection to them)

Sensors are easy to change, but if your warning lights are permanently on, then you'll need a garage with Testbook to turn them off again.

Modulator Control Block failure is expensive, about £330 plus VAT plus fitting.

The connection issues for the Shuttle Valve switches are documented elsewhere:

ABS Mod - Land Rover Club V.I.

I have done the soldering mod on my own Disco 2 and so far it has been fine, but we had non-permanent lights up in the first place.

Folks,

Thanks for the help to those who were helpfull, It turned out to be the hub bearings which was flagging an intermitent fault with the abs sensor so I replaced the o/s/f hub (c/w abs sensor) which has fixed the problem and now all lights are out and all systems are go...

Thebiglad,

try unplugging your abs module multi plugs then find an icy road and try braking, you will soon learn simple physics states that although friction is greatly reduced on ice - there is still a large friction factor when applying 2 ton to 4 x 6" square areas, with abs, as you say it basically applies the brakes until the point of locking, and then releases extremely fast sensing all four wheels, this provides optimum friction on whatever wheel, i am well aware of how the abs system works and as a matter of fact i passed the same road (same conditions) this morning with abs now working and i can tell you the difference was unbelievable... actually having the vehicle stop as appose to it locking all four wheels and becoming a 2 ton sledge....even when shifting into 1st, 2nd and low...

I am also aware of how to drive in bad weather conditions as i have been doing so for a number of years with and without driver aids such as ABS, TC, HDC, DTC....and gear boxes...:p

Regards,

Gixer1

but hey....thanks for the post;)

just read your thread. how did you get on with the 4 lights problem.I've got the same.i changed the shuttle valve switch and then the brake light came on the dash.I have not tried to clear the 3 amigos yet as it was my next job after fitting the new svs.so I too have four light now. It's not the handbrake switch as Ihave checked that out.
