I’ve had to bring my Landy Disco 2 auto home twice over the past week in ‘limp home mode’ with the two flashing green M & S warning lights on. It’s now a total non starter. I’ve charged the battery up, removed the ECU and found some oil inside the red connector (which I cleaned out), but still no luck. The engine turns over but won’t stay running. I’ve noticed a constant buzzing coming from the engine control (EC) relay (no. 9) which worried me a bit, so I’ve disconnected the battery for now (which obviously stopped the buzzing). I did try swapping the relay with another one but it was the same problem, so I don’t think it’s the relay.
Is the ECU screwed. I don’t want to waste £260 on an ECU rebuild if that’s not the problem.
Anyone have any ideas.
Cheers.

It's premature to blame the ECU without any diagnose. Remove R9, bridge the perpendicular cavities in the fusebox and crank it then report the result... also simply cleaning the oil without replacing the injector loom is like a massage to a wooden leg

Many thanks sierrafery. Will give that a bash tonight. I was going to get on and replace the loom. Any advice on a good supplier for that?

Once again, thanks for your help.

Ok I’ve now replaced the injector loom, cleaned everything up and put it all back together. The engine fired up and run ok for a few minutes, then misfired and died out. It wouldn’t start again after that.
The R9 relay is ticking again so I’ve removed that. Now I want to do the test you suggest - bridging the perpendicular cavities. Before I go ahead, can I just check how I should do this (before I damage anything). Do I simply insert a piece of wire into the two cavities, and then turn the engine over?
What am I then looking to happen?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, exactly so... and see if it still dies or it keeps running like that then we'll know more
Ok i tried starting the Landy again this morning (as I hadn’t touched it for a week). It started first time and with no green flashing lights. It run ok for about 6 minutes then misfired a few times and died out. I then noticed the relay ticking away loudly.
I then removed the relay and bridged the two cavities as you suggested. It wouldn’t even turn over at all then.
Any more thoughts?
Many thanks.
Mike

Are you sure you bridged the perpendicular cavities of R9 ? ...cos doing that should not stop it crank whatsoever

Those are parallel not perpendicular, you have to bridge the other two...let's hope this didnt affect the ECU cos you bridged the coil ... though the ECU might be the culprit anyway

i'll make you a guide and i'll tell you the steps to check with multimeter, two more questions
1. do you have RAVE?
2. did the engine management warning light show itself when the engine ran with bridged relay? ...and what year is the D2

Thanks Sierrafery.

No don’t have Rave, I’m using Jaguar/Land Rover icarsoft.
The engine management light wasn’t on.
The D2 is a 2002

OK, downoad and install RAVE 1 from here http://www.d-lander.com/manuals/ cos you'll need the electrical library, i'll make a guide and post it later tonight cos i'm in the night shift then you can do the tests tomorrow which should lead us to an answer ... Icarsoft tool is quite useles when it comes to the Td5 engine management but read the fault codes anyway let's see what it sais even though those codes can be false

confirm when you have RAVE installed and you can access the electrical library - connector views and read the introduction to learn the wire colour codes then you'll be able to follow my guide.

Ok cool. Thank you so much. Was just about to give up and spend a fortune (I can’t afford) at a garage. I’m also loving learning all this (so there’s always a silver lining!).
Cheers Sierrafery. You’re a star!
