2001 Discovery TD5 Autobox help

Hi all

Its been while since Ive been here but have today returned to Land Rover ownership.

Ive bought a 2001 TD5 which has a duff Autobox.

Can anyone advise if any Disco TD5 box will fit this car since I have found a good '05 box (minus the ECU). The guy selling it is a nice chap who may be able to help fit it.

Would the ECU off mine be compatible? Will the 05 box work with the 2001 running gear?

Gday if its the HB5zf22 or 24 no
If its the HB4ZF 22 yes ,,,there is a plate on the side ,,, let me know the numbers ,,, Also remember that the touqe converter has to be aligned 100% if not as you bolt up the box to the motor you will push the converter thru the trans pump ,,,, then its "Send me another box this one is dead "

Hi, any td5 box will fit and the ECU is compatible unless the problem is not a management one but pure mechanical, you'll just have to reset addaptive values to make it perfect.... are you 100% certain that the autobox is at fault and not something else?

Yes - the original box has been run low of oil due to seal failure, driven and has cooked as a consequence!
I've purchased the '05 box now (as I didn't want to miss out and figured it's worth the money regardless).

- Robert, I don't have all of the numbers off the 05 box, but here are the ones I know of:

This one's a bit sketchy to read but best guess as follows (from the white label on the box)
284 1043010773-4000285

I have googled these and I think it shows it as a ZF4-HP24.
(Total side step and purely out of curiosity, are these the same boxes as Jaguar XJ-6 4.0's?)

G`day Gallen ,,, Ferry would be the man to know about the box numbers but i believe the HP-24 was in the 4.6 hse discovery and is (i think 20mm longer as the touqe converter is bigger )
ZF4 is a zf box 4 speed ( thats the easy bit ) ,, Funny thing i went thru this when i brought my D2 it didnt make it home ,, GB fail , I put a reco in as i didnt want dramas ,

Let us know ,,, I have seen people put Gearbox ecu from the v8 into the TD5 as it changes the shift points ,,, I have Re flashed my TD% ecu (For the motor) with a tune i made ,,, totally different car to drive ,,, If you Have the NNN ecu i can flick you a copy of the ecu map ,,,,

I'm told the box was out of a stolen/recovered 05 Disco TD5 - of which he used the engine in his with the existing manual box.

He's a really nice chap actually and has suggested a friend who's going to fit it for me - so would seem a bit odd if it turns out not to fit?!

Will have to see what happens!

I hope it works out for you , the only spec`s i can find is for the 99 to 04 , So sorry i don't know the box out of an 05 ,,, I thought they went to the V6 diesel then ,, but i don't know enough about them sorry ,,
The box is a pain to fit ,, if the person don't fit it 100% correct it will die fast ,,, Ferry has a measurement from the bell housing to the toque converter that shows if its inserted proper , ,,,, i did mine and was told about this the day before i was to fit ,,,lucky i checked as was 10mm sticking out would have damaged the pump ,,,,,

To be honest I know I've taken a big punt and from what you've said, I'm interested to see what happens!

If Ferry could let me know any measurements it would be much appreciated - and maybe I can pass them on.

It does however seem the box I've bought vs the year is rather a conundrum - so perhaps I've quoted incorrect info?

The seller's been really helpful and gone over and above to put me in touch with his mechanic, so would be unfair for me to doubt what I've been told and put any discrepancies down to myself!

I'll have to see what happens and I promise to keep you updated.

Whatever happens I'm looking forward to getting the Disco!
